Water Availability @ Boulder Pass/Brown Pass/Janet/Waterton

Post by steve Gerard »

Hello,

We are hiking Aug. 30 2015.

Starting at Lake Kintla and ending at waterton/Goat Haunt and wondering where or if there are areas lacking water sources? I figure Lower and upper Kintla lake will have plenty of water for us?

Day 1 Start> Lake Kintla
Day 2 > Upper Kintla
Day 3 > Boulder Pass (Water source issues?)
Day 4 > Brown Pass (Water source issues?)
Day 5 > Lake Janet (Water source issues?)
EXIT Waterton/Goat Haunt Ranger Station (Water source issues between Janet and Ranger station?)

I have USGS topo maps and see several streams along the way but not sure if they run year round.

Thanks for any help.

I've only camped at Boulder but I've heard there is a source at Brown and I'm sure there is one at Janet. I'd be surprised if there are any designated sites in Glacier Park that don't have water sources.

Thanks Paul.

I guess what I'm curious about is...

Typically between August 30 -- September 5

Is there a shortage of water once you pass upper lake kintla on the way to Boulder Pass.

Is there a shortage of water between Boulder Pass and Brown Pass.

Is there a shortage of water between Brown Pass and Lake Janet.

Is there a shortage of water between Lake Janet and Goat Haunt ranger station.

There is a little creek/stream at Lake Janet. If I remember correctly, it is close to the
cooking area.

I have never been at a campsite in Glacier without water ... The worst place was head of Red Eagle Lake
where you had to wade in muck to get to halfway drinkable water (with filtering!).

Going up from Kintla Lake, the last water you will have before the campground at Boulder Pass will be the stream crossing at Kintla Creek. That would be a good place to top off your water.

Between Boulder and Brown Pass, I recall a number of melt streams crossing the rocks, but I am not sure how strong the flow will be. I know that I did not collect water from these sources, but I was probably in good shape water-wise. If you were in serious need, you could take the spur trail down to Hole-in-the-Wall Campground, where a strong creek flows through.

Between Brown Pass and Lake Janet, you will come in close to Thunderbird Pond. Alternately, you could hike down the spur trail to Lake Francis for water.

The only water I recall from Lake Janet (ample water) to Goat Haunt is the Waterton River, but by that time you are pretty close to Waterton Lake itself.

The Brown Pass campsite has a water source along the trail tow Bowman Lake. Once the stream near the campsite dries up you need to hike west until the trail begins to drop off the pass to get water.

All other campsites you listed have adequate water sources very close.

Awesome. Thanks for the detailed info on water sources. I'm marking up my maps! Water soooo heavy. I prefer to not carry too much.

Heff936 and I will be starting from the Kintla trailhead on the 30th also! Our first camp right now is Kintla but we hope to change it to Upper Kintla. Hope to see you on the trail!
