Dave Parker is the expert on bear spray here, but I personally believe this device is more of a "gimmick" than anything else.
I'm not saying the fellow who developed this product is not serious or sincere. I just believe it's one of those ideas that looks good in theory, but that isn't really a practical device for bear safety....imo...fwiw.

I'll stick with my Counter Assault hung on my sternum strap where I know I can access it immediately and deploy it quickly.
If I have to turn my back on a charging bear and assume the "fetal" safety position, it'll mean I will have already "shot my wad" so to speak...and the bear will have broken off its charge---hopefully.

Just my opinion, y'all buy and use whatever you want. 8)

I could see this device having issues with accidental discharges too. It's not something that I'd want to fool with nor would I want to hike behind someone having it on their pack.

This has been around for over 3 years now, I am surprised that it is just now showing up in the news, as with many gimmicks that have come up over the years, it has not sold well, in three years, I have seen exactly 1 in the stores and it has not sold, the idea is when you are down on your stomach, it will give you spray to shoot up into the bears face. For my money, I will have already sprayed before I have to get in the fetal position, which I have sprayed twice in the past to break off attack charges.

It is not something I would invest my money in.
nor would I want to hike behind someone having it on their pack.
You and me both Paul!

I suspect that practical jokers would have a field day with this.

Of course this backpack might be useful for those hikers who seem to insist on burying their bear spray in their backpack rather than having it more readily available.
