I wonder whether a National Geographic or Outdoors article is behind this trend?
Certain trails in NH's White Mountains have been overrun since they were identified in a "10 best world hikes" list.

I did see a group of trail runners when I was in Grand Canyon in March 2012. They seemed very fit, and prepared. I thought they were local to the area.
