Banff and jasper

Planning a trip to glacier sept 10-16. We are avid hikers and enjoy hiking many of glacier parks trails. We are flying into Calgary and driving down to waterton to hike boulder pass. Sevrral questions: what are chances of getting back country permit to stay at boulder pass or hole in wall that time of year? What are banff and jasper parks like compared to glacier? Do their trails compare well to glaciers? Is it worth a side trip for a day or two? Any particular hikes standout in those parks?
