2 hikers injured in Yellowstone by grizzly

Even though Glacier is the focal point, the Flathead and the surrounding area presents boundless activities, talk about it here.

Thanks for posting. (There is the question in my mind: discharged bear spray - did it affect the sow?)
Bear cubs are so curious! I was walking in some NH fields one year and a current-year cub came out of a hedge, saw me, and started trotting toward me. Gaah! said I, backing off. Then came mom. (to be cont. :D )

Sounds like another successful use of bear spray:

Then on GOod Morning America this morning they said there were two attacks yesterday - the other one was about 60 miles away in IDaho - two researchers or something like that also had to deploy bear spray against a grizzly - I think he got bit on the hand - weird

Though the Yellowstone incident could have been much worse than it was, one thing worth noting here is the four-person size of the hiking party. For a long time the Park Service has recommended against visitors hiking alone in bear country, and in recent years the NPS has recommended even larger-size hiking parties in many locations. I think this may have given some people a false sense of safety if they choose to hike as part of a larger group ... I've actually seen a couple of posts here that have suggested that. This incident is a reminder that there are no guarantees hiking in bear country, no matter how many people you hike with.

The initial reports on this were misleading...it came out later that the party attacked was a party of only TWO hikers...the other party of two hikers arrived on the scene as the incident was concluding. So it was NOT a party of four as initially reported. Very important difference. But even parties of four or more should exercise the same caution and safeguards.
