Permits for NON-developed campsites

Post by hikenm »

Good morning, got a question for your experienced GNPers out there...

How does GNP go about assigning permits for trips that are cross-country, off established trails and involve camping "at large" where there are no established campsites? Apparently it is allowed to some extent, based on some of the postings on this forum. Can I request it ahead of time in the lottery - if so, how? Or, is that just something that has to be done in person as a walk-up request?

Thanks

Camping at undesignated sites is readily allowed in the Coal Creek Nyack Wilderness zone. There are established guidelines for where to place your camp. You cannot apply for these undesignated sites in advance. For other areas in Glacier I suggest discussing your plans in person with the Subdistrict ranger in charge of the area you are interested in well before the start of your trip.
