Hillsound Trail Crampons

Post by Selkie »

Some good reviews of Hillsound Trail Crampons and Hillsound Trail Crampons Pro have appeared on hiking sites.

Both seem to have slightly more aggressive teeth than the Katoolah Microspikes, and have a Velcro strap to keep the crampon on the boot so one doesn't walk out of them, as might happen with the Microspikes (generally when the slightly loose chains on Microspikes get tangled up in a rock; but you can also add your own Velcro strap to Microspikes).

The Trail Crampons Pro have plates at the bottom to prevent snow balling around the spikes. The design approaches that of a traditional 10-point crampon.
There is some question whether the plates at the bottom might make it less easy to transition from ice to dirt and rock than w/ the Microspikes.

This is an interesting addition to winter hiking footgear. Black Diamond has also come out with some "pocket" spikes (my term), less than the full monte of a mountaineering crampon.
