Snow and Wildflowers in 2011

Post by hshakan »

Hello to everyone. I'm new to GPC and have been to Glacier a few times. We'll be visiting this year the 3rd week of July (cannot wait!!) and I wanted to ask what kind of impact the huge snowpack will have on the wildflower blooms?

Welcome to the Board!!!!

I haven't had any real experience with wildflowers as my trips have all been in September; but I'm also headed out there the third week of July this year and I'm looking forward to seeing some bloom in the Park!!!!

The extra moisture from the spring rains and melting snow has brought good conditions for wildflower blooms. Lupines are especially bountiful this year as are many others.

I believe I read elsewhere that lingering snow in the upper elevations will cause many flower species to bloom out of their normal patterns, which would mean many species blooming at the same time and creating a gorgeous mosaic.

That could be true. When spring is delayed and then temps warm quickly flowers seem to rush into bloom all at once. Same is probably true for delayed snowmelt.

I don't know a lot about flowers, but based on what I saw last weekend when over there, the flowers should be going full tilt the last half of this month.
