Happy Easter!! The Starling has Struck. That is Kathy Kode for slowhiker has been to Babb, and there is, indeed, a new eating establishment next to the post office. It is right next door to the post office to the south.
My take on the whole thing is that it is a work in progress. I walked in and instead of finding a room with tables or booths, there was a huge empty room being used as storage. If you “follow the light” to the back of the building there is a smaller room with a four long tables and some chairs. It gave me the feeling of eating a meal in the church basement.
The menu is very limited. Homemade soup, burgers, cold ham, beef, and turkey sandwiches, a BLT, couple of breakfast sandwich options, cinnamon rolls, and PIE. The burger was decent and the pie (banana cream
was the only choice) was homemade and acceptable….not Park Café good, but acceptable and the prices were exceptionally economical. A burger was $4.50 and came with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onion. The pie was $2.75.
The best part of the lunch was the conversation going on around me. Some locals were raking the BIA over the coals, and then they started in on moving cows and women not following directions when moving cows, from there it switched to a newborn horse and grandchildren.
The lady who was cooking and waiting tables was describing her work day as working at school, coming to the café, working there, then going home and making cinnamon rolls for the next day and then starting all over again. I am not sure of when it is open but Saturday lunch was covered. It definitely had its very own atmosphere and would be a good place for a quick burger and maybe even a sack lunch for hiking if you like ham, beef, or turkey.
As a side note, make sure you take enough money (even though it was economical) because there are no dishes to wash. Everything except glasses, cups and silverware, was styrofoam, so not too green.
And because I know Lyman will want to know this: my “disguise” was teacher in weekend mode—jeans and t-shirt. I don’t think they suspected a thing.
And here are a few more shots from my Saturday. As you can see, it is still kind of winter, but it is definitely showing signs of waking up. Give it a few more warm, sunny days and I am sure there will be glacier lilies. I saw mountain goats at Goat Lick on Thursday and swans on the ponds between Browning and East Glacier, so spring will be here soon.
