GTTS Chalet

Post by Jay w »

The Glacier Park Facebook page had an interesting photo. The caption:

This photo by George A. Grant, taken July 5, 1933, shows three waitresses in Swiss costumes on the veranda of the Going-to-the-Sun Chalets. St. Mary Lake is behind them.

Louis Hill and the Great Northern Railway promoted Glacier as the “American Alps” in early marketing materials for the park. In keeping with that moniker, it seemed only logical that they chose the Swiss chalet architectural style when building their network of hotels and chalets in Glacier. This theme even manifested itself in the costumes of the hotel and chalet employees.

Thanks Jay,
Every time I walk up on Sun Point I think about what it must have been like to stay in the chalet there. Especially before there was a GTTS Road and travel to the chalet from Saint Mary was by boat or horseback.

I think they should rebuild some of these historic lodges.
