The Dragon's Tail--False Summit--July 30 2015

Post by PeteE »

I'm kinda "draggin" myself at the moment.
Got up and 0245 to drive over to Logan Pass.
Arrived just after 0500--and before any sheep. One did show up shortly after.

Anyone ever see a porcupine at Logan Pass?
I saw one right in front of the outhouse doors.
Surprised me in the dark. I thought it was a marmot till I saw his tail with the quills.

Sky was too clear for interesting sunrise pictures.
Beautiful day for hiking though. Mild temps at day break. No or little wind.
Two other guys with BIG tripods and cameras went out ahead of me. I passed them shortly as they were setting up for some pics.

I'm eating as I type. I'll post a few pics shortly.
I have a lot of video, most of which will put regular chatters to sleep. 8)
It may appeal to lurkers and others. I'll see.
It will take a few days to edit and split into logical sections.

PS

One important thing I learned.
The Park is restricting access to Logan in the following manner according to the Ranger I spoke with.
They are stopping all traffic at The Bend when Logan Pass becomes congested.
Then 20 cars at a time will be released to leave for Logan when Rangers in the parking lot determine there are enough spaces for thjem to park.
He said it doesn't always work "perfectly" but better than the chaos before.
So there you go.
As I say repeatedly if you need to roll out of bed early.

The big red slab of a rock is your landmark to take the trail that goes uphill immediately after the rock. No big deal if you don't, but the higher trail is preferable imo

Look at your back trail. Sometimes a nice view.

This is the last snow field just before "going round the corner" and it is now breached so that you don't have to walk on it

This view shows a portion of the "lower trail" as I call it. I don't like using it. More on why in the video.

I got to this point on the 1st saddle at 0800. Hidden Lake was almost like glass.

A good photographer with the right gear could have done a lot with this scene. It was beautiful up there today

Mt Clements dominates your view on the return, just as Reynolds does walking out to the Dragon's Tail

I went out to the overlook on the way back just to see how crowded it was. People were everywhere on the Hidden Lake trail....as you'll see in the video when I get it up
Image

A couple enjoying the view as I headed down. Camera battery died after this shot. I was done anyway LOL!!. The boardwalk was like an "ant farm".

Thanks for looking!

The only porcupine I've ever seen have been hit on the road so seeing one in the park would be a cool experience. Did you get a pic or was it too dark?

Looking forward to your pics and videos. I am leaving Saturday morning to pick up grandson at Lincoln and then go to Flathead for our family week at the cabin we rent. After that Braeden and I will be in Glacier. If we don't get a walk-up permit we'll just day hike. It sure is a PIA planning/packing for both scenarios. I don't really want to take a cooler full of food if we end up getting a walk-up. I have a cabin at Johnson's for the first night. If we end up day hiking we'll either tent camp at Johnson's or try to get a site at Many Glacier. If that is the case, we will have to run over to Browning to get some groceries to cook.

Usually I carry my camera to the outhouse "just in case" I see something interesting.
It was too dark so this time I didn't take it :(
I don't know if marmots would try to pull open a door left partly open or not.
I believe a porcupine would though. Why I say that I don't know LOL
They all like the salt they could lick up on the floor. 8)
This guy was 1/2 again the size of the marmots out there.
He just waddled off to a spot underneath a utility trailer when I shined my flashlight on him.
I didn't really want to pet him anyway! 8)

I added a few more pictures this morning.
I made a lot of video on this trip. It's going to take a few days to get it edited and posted.
A good part of it was aimed at people who might be reluctant to try doing this hike.
It will be "Hiking 101" for many of the folks here on the GNP chat, but might be helpful for some who want to try it.
The trail, while not maintained, is pretty good. There is some exposure in places, but nothing too severe.
I give my "non expert" advice/suggestions on how to manage walking on some of the terrain that may be sketchy for some people.
Maybe the video will help some get over their fear of moderate exposure. I hope so...
The hike out the Mt Reynolds/Dragon's Tail mountaineering trail offers some of the best scenery for the effort required of any trail in Glacier National Park.
The elevation gain is about 1500ft over 3.5 miles. It is well worth doing. Most can do this hike in a half day.
And remember to get up to Logan Pass early in the morning. You won't regret it.
I promise 8)

cheers

Yesterday when I was doing the Dragons Tail I looked over at Heavy Runner.
I checked Blake Passmore's climbing guide tonight and I think I'll go up on the false summit of Heavy Runner tomorrow (Saturday) morning.
It looks pretty easy and Passmore even said it's a good peak for "beginners".
Distance is about 13 miles round trip and elv gain/loss of about 2000ft
So good one for the Geezer to try.
Plus, the Reynolds Creek area is visible as well as a lot of the St Mary Valley from on Heavy Runner.
The distance from the false summit to Reynolds Creek CG is about 3 miles as Clyde the Raven flies. 8)
I'll see what sort of pictures and video I can get to post here tomorrow night.
I plan to leave early again so as to beat the traffic and get a start in the relative cool of the morning.
Sound like a good plan?

Thanks for all the photos. Beautiful. Also the comments about the road and people are helpful. Heading to the park tomorrow. Was wondering about whether to try to drive up to Logan pass or not. We won't get there early enough so if we do well go late just do daughter can see it.

Hey Pete,
The red line in your photo does not go to Heavy Runner. That ridge is sometimes called Reynolds Ridge. It's a nice walk out there but it's not Heavy Runner.
In your photo Heavy Runner is tucked behind Mount Reynolds.
The photo below was taken on a climb to the true summit of Dragon's Tail. Getting farther out on the Dragon's Tail ridge allows one to see the summit of Heavy Runner peaking out from behind Reynolds. Hope you had a good day.

I found this photo from my Dragon's Tail Climb. It's not too great a photo but it shows more of Heavy Runner. This photo was taken from the true summit of the Dragon's Tail. Since that spot is higher and further out on the Dragon's Tail more of Heavy Runner can be seen.

Love the photos. The morning shadows are really interesting. I imagine those would be great in black and white, too. How long did the whole hike take?

ROFLAMO!!!!!!!!!
Oh lordy Ralph..I found that out this morning. Did I ever
I made some other mistakes as well. I was all screwed up trying to correlate Passmore's route with-- what was in front of me.
Humiliating as it will be I will talk about my mistakes when I do the hiking report.
I met 4 people out there on that spur ridge, 3 of whom were park employees, one of which is a firefighter for the park on her 1/21 days off.
They pointed out they way they were going to get to the saddle on Heavy Runner...and I watched them go the whole way.
This is not a hike I can do now, maybe never.
I'm not fit enough, and don't have the legs to negotiate that scree run they used.
It's very steep and I would have to come back that way and go up it. Heaver Runner just has too much "up and down" for me.
I video'd them for part of that scree run down.

So I hiked out that spur ridge. It has some very different looks at familiar places.
You can see the general area where the fire began. Around 10-11AM it was smoldering/smoking in multiple places that I could see.
I have some pics and video of what I could see from out there. It's not great though.
The bad news is the wind was, and still is--BLOWING. The wind really picked up on the way back to the Reynolds-DT saddle.
That made some of the traverse a bit trickier for me.
There are a couple short stretches where the "goat trail" gets kinda skinny and rock outcroppings sticking out don't help things.
The geezer had to exercise caution in foot placement. Gusty wind doesn't help much and falling isn't really an option. 8)

All in all a good day. I made some bad mistakes but I recovered. No harm no foul.
I got some really GOOD goat video, 10 minutes plus, of a ewe with her kid, and one I called "sis" or "auntie"
Since I believe the second ewe was the sister of the ewe with the baby. :)

Momma did get my undivided attention at one point as you'll see in the video.
Bottom line is this in my opinion:
"Goats, especially dominate females and males, go where they want to go. And if they want to go where you are standing, you best move."
I'll see if I can get the goat video up asap.
Lots of minutes of "goats just being goats", munching in this tiny meadow on the trail.

later
I need a shower and food. 8)
Thanks AGAIN Ralph for pointing out my error.
I made some other errors like not getting peak names right all the time :(
Feel free to correct me.

If you don't lollygag around stopping all the time to yak and take videos and pictures like I do... 8)
You can go up and back in 4 hours having time to get pictures.
It's only 3.5 miles from the Logan parking lot.
I'd call it a "1/2 day hike" because you would still have time to do something else in the Logan area.
Like out to the "spur ridge" that runs East off Mt Reynolds. You'll see that in my hiking report.
You would have plenty of time to add that to the Dragon's Tail.
Well worth the effort imo.

Here is a link to the goat video I took.
I think "goat people" will like it 8)
Make sure you have the volume turned high enough so you can hear the goats snuffling and munching the plants. The baby goat makes soft little "squeaks or chirps" too.

Totally loved all the pics, keep them coming. Well except for the ones with the boots hanging over the edge. Made my fear of heights kick in. :P

Oh Man!!
The boot shots are fun!
The only trouble is that it's difficult for me to find a spot to sit my skinny butt in all that broken rock.
I wished I had had my "sissy pad" to sit on for those boot shots.

I have Part 1 of my video uploading now. I shot WAY more video than usual for a simple hike like this.
There's a lot of Hiking 101 in it for some people.
And some of it will undoubtedly bore some folks anyway.
That's OK. I still had fun making the video. Some of it was a bit challenging at times as i slipped while camming... 8)

Video from Dragons Tail hike
Sorry, I'm going to redo it.
I didn't like it too much in retrospect.
