Fun Hikes during GMS Climbing Week 2015, 7-20 to 7-26

Post by Selkie »

The Glacier Mountaineering Society is offering some tasty hikes "for strong hikers" during the GMS Climbing week.

1. "The Dash": Logan Pass to Goat Haunt in 1 day.
2. Floral Park traverse: ice axe required, and some foot traction (somebody must have read Toddnick's exciting TR, right up there in the "Night on Bald Mountain" category).
3. Bearhat Mntn. That's always struck me as an intriguing climb.
4. Natahki L and Altyn Peak
5. A hike that goes through Birdwoman cirque, above the falls.
6. East Glacier to Two Medicine, over Scenic Pt.

One must join the GMS, for a trifling fee, and signup is Monday, May 11. I would expect most hikes to be at capacity signup within an hour.

It's worth browsing the whole summer calendar, if you are interested in some more ambitious effort in the Park. Rising Wolf seems to be an annual favorite, and occasionally there are 3- or 5-peak circuits, or something across the road in the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

My pleasure!
There will likely be one or more hikes/climbs/scrambles on weekend days throughout the summer, easing into lower-elevation events, then snowshoe and skiing trips in late fall.
If you join, new trips will be sent to your email address.

The climbing week is always the last week in July. It's terribly hot (to my northern way of thinking about the world), but the flowers are generally quite good.

Montana Wilderness Association (http://www.wildmontana.org) also offers (free) group hikes, some in or around Glacier, and their summer schedule is available online.

Thanks for the update Marjorie!

There are some great choices in this year's GMS week (Natahki Lake/Altyn is still on the top of my list of hikes that I haven't done yet) unfortunately, this year is September only.... :(

The good news is that countdown is progressing nicely...only 119 more days!!!

Hi Todd!
Nice to see you around these parts. :D

At least a couple of those hikes, the East Glacier to Two Medicine and the Mad Dash from Logan Pass to Goat Haunt (yep, you'll be done in time to catch the last boat), have been noodled as what-ifs by Chattters, so here is the grand opportunity!

Floral Park...

If you're really into pain, GMS has something that will answer later in the season:

Sunday, Aug. 30: Heavens Peak (wave to those enjoying mint juleps on the balcony of Granite Park Lodge)
Sat., Sept. 5: Triple Divide Peak (not Pass), continue along ridgeline to Norris Mountain

Adding:
Skyline, Sat. Aug. 30: Start at Many Glacier, hike to Cracker Lake and keep going, over a few peaks, the last one Siyeh. Limited to 6 ppl. One M coordinator, one F coordinator.

Hmm, another 30 hours will tell!

I'm fetched by Denise Grabowski's women-only hike on June 20, Elk Calf Mountain and Flattop, but knowing the kind of women who hike GMS hikes, I'd be left in the dust in 3 minutes.

I'm still interested in the SE-SW arc - Calf Robe, Dancing Lady, Summit, East Glacier to Two Med hike, and, across the road from Glacier, Ouzel Peak. And anything accessed from Cut Bank CG. (And generally plan to spend equal time in the Cabinets, and the Yaak. Good hiking there!)
