I think that with the quality of socks nowadays such as the SmartWool you have, the need for liners has been greatly reduced. As a prophylactic, I do use Band-Aid Friction Block Stick each morning before I start out.

I usually wear liners and while I think they help to a degree they are not a panacea. If your shoes or boots don't fit properly or aren't broken in, you can still get blisters. And I agree that Friction Block Stick is helpful as well.
