Best hikes for bad weather days

Post by danlowery »

So with some of your recommendations and prior GNP experience, I think I have some great day hikes planned for our trip sep 9-14: belly river over ptarmigan to mg where we will be staying; sperry glacier comeau pass from lake mcd; hockey ref; and siyeh pass loop. That is our plan if we have good weather. What are some alternative hikes you reccomend if it is really windy or raining? Thanks again

Generally, really bad weather days, I stick to the valley....

Swiftcurrent Trail, Medicine Grizzly Lake, Upper Two Medicine Lake....

Or hang out at one of the lodges and drink beer by the fire.

I have always checked weather on the other ends of the park. Some times we head up to Waterton and the weather has already changed or gone to the other side of the park. The webcams can give you a clue if you can get internet access or ask at the visitor centers.

If the weather looks real bad, we just give up on hiking and head for Waterton, Kalispell or Whitefish.

Yeah, it's often surprising how different the weather on the two sides of the park can be ... so the first thing to do is check the weather on the opposite side of the park.

And if that doesn't work, drive up to Polebridge and stuff yourself with baked goods. :)

I usually don't worry about wind unless I'm climbing. This is Montana after all. Rain keeps me closer to home.

The waterfalls hike is my favorite rainy day hike (start at Sun point on the Going to the sun road and pass by Baring falls and St. Mary falls en route to Virginia falls as the ultimate destination). Maybe takes 4-5 hours at a leisurely pace. I've done Red eagle lake a couple times as a rainy day hike too...

If I plan a hike on the East side and wake up to poor weather, we usually head over to the west side and hike there. Or vice versa. This has worked more often than not.
