You know the road

Post by Jay w »

My trip report originally showed a photo from this series in B&W. Here's one in color.

Indeed! :D Hudson River School, of a place ending in -kyll or Gap.
The vast glories of nature, o'ertowering mere mortals, poised on a cliff at center right. (Horses, too. At least one.)

Very nice!

That's the one. Magnificent pictures - both of them. Just what I needed today!

Here are a few of my favorites from the Hudson River Painters:
Image
The painting was commissioned by Jonathan Sturges and presented to Bryant as a gift after presenting an excellent speach at Thomas Cole's funeral the prior year. The painting shows Thomas Cole (left) and William Cullen Bryant (right) just below Fawn's Leap on top of Church's Ledge (ledge just above Moore's Bridge) with Haines Falls in the background. The painting was sold in 2005 for 35 million dollars to Walmart heiress Alice Walton. The painting was relocated and displayed at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas in November of 2011.

Image
This one of Kaaterskill Falls was painted by Thomas Cole. At the top of the lower fall is an Indian believed to be Chief Shandaken (One of the most famous Mohawk Indians). The rock he is standing on has been washed over the top.

Image
This one was painted by Thomas Cole, and was called Sunrise-over-the-Hudson. It took a while for me to find the location where it was painted. He painted it from the North-east summit of RoundTop Mtn. Kaaterskill High Peak is in the picture with the Hudson River in the background.
