Jan 15th (roughly)

Post by Jay w »

Some serious cold went through northern MT recently. I'm seeing a number of -40F temps 1/12 - 1/15. I think of that, 20-30 mph winds, and teepees and wonder how they did it years ago.

The cold air dropped down from Canada. I think Teapot accidently left her freezer door open.

That made me laugh, Orin! :D

We had some extreme temps over the weekend with wind chills down to minus 50. Dangerously cold.

Orin's comment was funny, good one. When I lived in Havre, I always blamed the cold on Canada.

Havre's temp was the lowest in the nation. Yep, wind chill is so cold!🥶

I hear snow is coming toward western Montana so that should warm it up a bit. They need the snow though so that is a good thing; especially for the Park.

Got down to -37 F at my house north west of Choteau MT last Friday evening (1/12/2024). I wasn't home because we were XC Skiing in West Yellowstone. Originally the NWS thought the temps would be warmer down there. I guess it was a little warmer there with daytime temps in the single digits and good skiing. The -39 F Saturday morning surprised us. By noon though it was +2 so we hit the trails again.

Now that I look at my previous post, I'm reminded of cold days at Eagle River Nordic in northern Wisconsin. Bert Kleerup would always remind us that no matter how cold it got someone up near Pound in the UP would report colder temps. Those Yooppers know how to tell a story.
