Oberlin Route Closed for Two Weeks

Post by Ear Mountain »

From the Glacier National Park Facebook page:
Have you ever filled up your water bottle at Logan Pass? Ever wondered where the water comes from?

This unique water system at the top of the Continental Divide is fed by annual snowpack melt and the remnant Clements Glacier.

Beginning today (August 8, 2017), the park will replace a 30-year-old pipe that brings water down the mountain to the holding tank that serves the visitor center. The Oberlin climbing route will be temporarily closed as a result.

A portion of the pipe that feeds the water system runs directly underneath the climbing route up to Oberlin. Because of this, the route will be closed for approximately two weeks while Montana Conservation Corps crews hand-dig out the line and replace it. Thanks for protecting the fragile alpine ecosystem up there by abiding by the closure. Off-trail travel in that region has a significant detrimental impact on alpine wildflowers and some wildlife.
