Will Sperry Be Open by August 2nd?

Post by res349 »

Hey all! First time poster here.

I'm heading to Glacier tomorrow and have reserved backcountry permits for Gunsight Pass Aug 1-3. I'm supposed to be camping at Sperry Campground the night of August 2nd. I'm starting to get concerned that the campground will not be available that night, since it is still showing as "temporarily not available" on the What's Available Tonight page https://home.nps.gov/applications/glac/ ... status.cfm. Does anyone have any info (or a good guess) as to when (if?) the campground will be open this season?

It's not the biggest deal in the world, since my first campsite is Lake Ellen Wilson and I could just hike out from there if need be. But I'd like to get up to Sperry Glacier after setting up camp at Sperry, if possible.

Thanks!

You could probably call the Glacier Backcountry camping office and see what the deal is on Sperry. It may be due to construction on the chalet.

I heard that the construction crew was staying there but they have their own housing set up now so hopefully it opens soon.

The yellow squares on the Backcountry Bulletin usually indicate there are sensitive environmental conditions. This usually means that the snow is almost melted out of the campsite and the campsite soils are soft and muddy. GNP waits until the soils have dried and the surfaces are firm enough for daily visitor use. This is the transition between winter use and summer camping. Hopefully your site will be available when you have it reserved.
