Hope the packers out there brought their long jammies 8)
A little snow would be nice for pictures but I doubt it will last long.
The weather in GNP is going to be clear and sunny for the next 3-4 days.

Doing the false summit of the DT tomorrow with FishDoctor and maybe Acacia
I hope they bring their cameras!

Might see "Granddaddy Fergus" pictured below.
I call him Granddaddy Fergus because he is big and looks "old" being all grizzled and grey 8)
And so he is surely the "boss marmot" in this part of the meadow behind the Visitor Center at Logan Pass.
Yeeeeehawww!

I got me a nice rock. Bring on the SunShine!

.DISCUSSION...Another hot day is in-store for today with isolated
thunderstorms possible this afternoon across southwest Montana,
northwest Montana and Lemhi county of Idaho. Fires are expected to
be active again today which will impact air quality across western
Montana and parts of Idaho. Winds aloft will primarily be out of
the southerly direction thus if you have fires to your south, you
will most likely see some type of degraded air quality.

Wednesday will be a more active day of thunderstorms and will
mainly be focused over Lemhi county, southwest Montana and along
the Continental Divide. The storms could get started a little
earlier than usual with storms expected to begin developing around
noon. The main concern with the storms will be strong gusty winds,
small hail, and lightning strikes.

Friday and Labor Day weekend will be cooler with unsettled
weather. Glacier National Park will see several days with highs
in the 50s and 60s, and even in the 40s at Logan Pass. Though no
significant accumulation is expected at this time, snow showers
are possible around 7,000 feet elevation and above this weekend.

Oh man. We don't need this at all. Rain is good. Clears the air.
Lightening is really, really bad.

.DISCUSSION...The complex weather scenario continues for today
through Thursday with southwesterly flow over the region. A
shortwave is going to pass through north central Idaho and western
Montana this afternoon and evening that will bring the threat for
showers and thunderstorms. The dry air in most places will again
lead to the potential for mostly dry thunderstorms, or showers
that produce little rain and gusty winds. There are indications
that storms may develop into a line and move from south to north,
which increases the threat for gusty winds with isolated wind
damage for 50+ mph wind gusts. Storms that develop will linger
through around 11pm in northwest Montana. The dry air, hot
temperatures, and threat for wind are also concerns for increased
fire danger.

High temperatures begin a cooling trend tomorrow while a trough
takes a stronger hold on the Pacific Northwest. Storms will again
be possible on Wednesday with southwest Montana and locations
along the divide to have highest chances. The cold front will
start to move in north central Idaho and western Montana on
Thursday so winds are likely to increase and high temperatures
will only be slightly above normal, but for now precipitation
looks to hold off.

Big changes to more fall-like weather are ahead for the Labor Day
weekend! Forecast models are all showing a large scale pattern
change that supports significantly cooler weather with a good
chance for showery precipitation. The details are still under
evaluation, especially relating to the chance for showers, but
temperatures at least 30 degrees cooler than those experienced
today are currently forecast. An even colder weather system is
being portrayed by the models for early next week which may bring
the chance for some mountain snow into the picture for Labor Day!
So stay tuned as we seem to be jumping head first into fall
starting next week.

&&

.AVIATION...A shortwave trough is approaching north central Idaho
and western Montana this afternoon and is supposed to reach the
region by this evening. There are indications that thunderstorms
will develop with this wave, that along with dry surface
conditions, could produce gusty winds. Most of the storm activity
will end by around 31/0600z. Wildfire smoke remains and could
cause reductions in visibility in valley locations again tonight
and Wednesday.

...MUCH COOLER FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND...

.DISCUSSION...Clouds will increase this morning as the next
weather disturbance begins to move into the Northern Rockies. The
best chance for thunderstorms today will be this afternoon across
Lemhi county and stretching into southwest Montana. A couple
thunderstorms will also be possible in Glacier park and the Bob
Marshall Wilderness this afternoon. The main threats from the
storms will be gusty winds, small hail and brief heavy rain.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to decrease during the
evening hours with a few showers lingering along the continental
Divide tonight.

Thursday will be fairly pleasant with mostly sunny skies and highs
in the 80s. A mostly dry day is expected across central Idaho and
western Montana with the exception of southwest Montana where a
few isolated storms are possible in the afternoon.

A broad trough will establish itself over the region by the end of
Friday, causing much cooler temperatures. High temperatures in the
60s this weekend will be around 20 degrees cooler than the
temperatures of the last few weeks. Glacier National Park will be
an area of concern, where high elevation temperatures will not
escape the 40s for several days. With cool, showery weather
conditions in the back country of the park will be raw at times.
Snow levels in the park will be around 7,000 feet Friday night
through Sunday, so any showers may produce snow.

&&

.AVIATION...Mid level clouds will be on the increase throughout
the morning and afternoon today with showers and thunderstorms
possible at area terminals. The best chance for thunderstorms is
expected to be near KBTM and KSMN between the hours of 31/2100Z
and 01/0100Z. Gusty winds of 30 mph or greater will be possible
from the thunderstorms. KMSO and KGPI could also see an isolated
thunderstorm during the afternoon.

...COOL LABOR DAY WEEKEND, ESPECIALLY IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK...

.DISCUSSION...
An all around pleasant day for central Idaho and western Montana
today with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s. Last
nights showers and steady winds will reduce the smoke across the
region by morning.

Friday a cold front will arrive causing much cooler temperatures
across the area, with highs mainly in the 60s and low 70s. Some
showers and thunderstorms will also come with the front,
especially in northwest Montana.

Glacier Park will be MUCH cooler, with the high temperature Friday
in the upper 40s at Logan Pass. Cloud cover, showers, and breezy
winds combined with the cooler temperatures are a classic scenario
for hypothermia for those in the back country who aren`t prepared
to stay warm and dry. Some snow showers are also possible around
7,000 feet and above, though any accumulation is not expected to
last very long due to the warm ground.

Relatively cool temperatures are forecast for Saturday with a
broad trough overhead leading to highs from 10-15 degrees below
normal. A few showers will also be possible, mainly across
northwest Montana.

A stronger and wetter storm system is still forecast for later
Sunday into Monday resulting in widespread showers. Snow levels
will likely be around 7000 feet with daytime temperatures from
15-20 degrees below normal. Those in the back country will likely
experience raw conditions once again, please stay tuned if you
have outdoor plans this holiday weekend.

Forecast models support continued troughing the remainder of next
week resulting in cooler than normal temperatures and occasional
showery weather.

Just be careful if you are out from home. Because there is a chance of being ill because of cold weather.
