It was a deluge. On the Rocky Mountain Front north of Choteau the sky is still dark and laden with moisture. No rain right now though. I got a brief look at the mountains this morning and noted quite a bit of fresh snow on Old Baldy. The peak rises to about 9,200 feet and looked pretty white.

Weather forecast indicates another day or so before things really dry out.

Our two week 2014 trip to Glacier ended on the 23rd. We had been staying in our tent in the Many Glacier Campground, but those last couple of days were more than we or the tent could take. Each night the leaks seemed to multiply. On the 22nd I called Xantera and was able to get a room at the Many Glacier Hotel. I was shocked that we could be so lucky. We balled up the tent, had a short memorial for it and stuffed into the dumpster and moved on to the hotel.

Now I have a whole year to find a new, reliable tent for our next Glacier adventure. Already planning for Glacier 2015!!!

We were supposed to backcountry camp at GUN and ELL on the 21st and 22nd. We ended up bagging our backcountry trip in favor of a couple nights in an Apgar Village cabin (which we were also able to get last minute). I was really disappointed at the time but after hiking to Sperry Chalet on the 23rd and hearing that Gunsight Pass and Lake Ellen Wilson were all socked in, and campers at those sites experienced cold, wet nights and muddy trails, it seemed like a smart decision.

From Lake MacDonald we could see that Gunsight Mountain was surrounded by a dark, menacing cloud, but the weather really held out on the west side. It was cloudy and windy, but didn't rain much at all.

Looks like ski time is just around the corner. But still hope to get a few more backpacks done before real winter set in.

while I enjoy skiing, I'm not quite ready for it yet...heading to the park next week on 9/10 and have a 5 night itinerary scheduled in the Belly river area..
hopefully it does not involve winter camping...

We drove through there on Tuesday the 2nd and it was sunny and warm and windy. Had a great burger at deli in Clark.

hm..how about 3 days of snow next week...actually, now the forecast has been downgraded to "only" 2 days..
1-3 inches for Babb and Waterton on Tuesday...
as of now we're still planning to start our backpacking trip on Friday, but will see what happens.

Yep, it is September. We can get almost any season's weather in September. A little snow will make the peaks look nice.

Fridays forecast looks ok to me.

Got there on the 23rd. Tough weather for the start but it cleared up nicely for my 3 days in the belly river area. Then it got cold, windy and wet for my second trip over labor day weekend. Still a good trip even though the weather was challenging at times.
