Jen you have our most heartfelt condolences. Laura and I felt lucky to find another another GNP lover in Indianapolis and through this chat page we became friends with Andy and Wendy. Our hearts are heavy. I hope you and your family find peace at this difficult time.

Jen,

For what it's worth, there are lots of people holding you and your family in our hearts and prayers right now as we think back to our fond memories of your dad and the place he loved (and loved sharing) so well.

I'm certain the cairn at Swiftcurrent Pass is going to grow by quite a bit this summer...

Peace and comfort to you all,
Joyce

Jen,

My sympathies go out to you and your family. Although I never met Andy, I felt like I knew him from our mutual love of Glacier which he so generously shared here.
I know we already miss him on the chat page. May God grant you comfort in your time of loss.

Jen,

I am so sorry to hear of your father's passing. I always wanted to meet your father since we were both Glacier hotel employees from the early 1970s (he was at Many Glacier Hotel and I was at Lake McDonald Lodge), but it seemed like we were old friends anyway. Your father helped so many people with his great knowledge and especially his boundless enthusiasm for Glacier. I think he was the most important person on the Chat and he has left a great legacy. My wife, Carlene, sometimes tells people that the only place where I want to go is Glacier Park, to which I reply, "What other place is there?" Your father would understand this and would certainly agree with it.

I will never be able to stand at Swiftcurrent Pass and look down that beautiful valley toward Many Glacier without thinking of your father.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family,

Lyman and Carlene Holmes

I just heard this song and thought it fit:

We'd stay up all night
Tryin' to find just the right rhymes
And we were fightin' the good fight
Hangin' on to the good times

Yes old friend we had some times
And later on the moon declined
To shine it's light so benevolently
It's grace withheld from our company
And though we went our own ways
We couldn't escape from where we came
So we find ourselves back at the table again
Tellin' stories of survivors and friends

Julie and I toasted Andy today,

Another poem. I do not know the author:

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousands winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there: I did not die.

I am not the writer in the family, but I would add the skate on the ice and mountain goat surveying the mountain range.

You will be missed, Andy.
Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.

The funeral was truly beautiful with both Jen and Kevin sharing memories of their dad. Wendy said to thank everyone for their sympathy and best wishes.

Jen,
so sorry about your loss and please accept our condolences.
We have learned a lot about Glacier thanks to your dad's posts and trip reports and we are grateful for that. He will be missed.

i am late to this & so sorry to hear about your loss. most years i'm a frequent visitor to the site as we have been to gnp 10 straight summers. this year we decided to do a trip to Oregon for the summer so i haven't been on hardly any & am just now seeing this. your father was an inspiration to a lot of people, motivating my wife & i to first, make our first trip, & secondly, to do some of the hikes we would have never considered. he's the one that made us fall in love with many glacier. we made the walk up the hill & had a picnic one evening to watch the sunset behind the hotel to the place he mentioned where all the employees would go. he also inspired us to do "the hockey ref hike" & we took another couple with us that had never hiked more than a mile or two. they made it with flying colors because of the beauty.

prayers to you & your family.

I haven't been to this site for quite a while. I've been back to Glacier but I'm more a photog than a hard core hiker.

I communicated several times with Hockey Ref on this site and found him giving, knowledgeable and helpful.

I'm speechless. I just don't know what to say.

This is a loss to the Glacier community. But mostly it's a loss for his family and those who knew him personally.

May he rest in peace.
