Pete,

I am glad you had mostly decent weather for your Granite Park Chalet trip. I noticed on the Park page that the GTTS road was closed at Avalanche today because of winter weather. Tonight was probably not such a good night to have a Granite Park Chalet reservation.

It has been four or five years since I have been to the Grinnell Glacier Overlook but I have never seen that many people on the trail and I don't think I have ever encountered more than a dozen at the overlook. I suppose the east side trail closings have pushed more people onto the HIghline Trail.

Great landscape pictures. I have seen Duck Lake from the overlook but I know it did not show up in my picture. And i enjoyed the Chalet interior pictures I have never stayed at the chalet.

Thanks

Bill

Thanks Bill!
The weather was great except for the damn WIND.
Same thing happened last September for my 3 night stay--WIND
I can't really complain. Could have been a snow storm 8)

That trail up to the overlook looked like the boardwalk at times--an ANT FARM!!
When I walked in on Wednesday morning I was freakin' out.
like you, I've never seen a crowd like that on that trail.

It's not often this late in the year that one can see Duck Lake from up there.
Usually there is smoke from fires and/or dust haze from dry weather.
So I was lucky in getting some decent panos from the overlook.

You should stay at the chalet sometime--two or three nights is best.
That gives you time to do some exploring or just relax and "hang out" and enjoy the beauty.

The GTTS road open up this afternoon, so I'm off to the summit of Piegan for second time this year for pics.
The remaining snow should provide some nice highlights on the peaks.
I learned some lessons from mistakes last time, so I hope to get some really good images this time.
The sun angle will NOT be ideal, but I'll do the best I can.

I plan to roll outa my rack at 0330 for an early start--maybe in the dark. :D
I'm packing my camera in my backpack and gonna hustle on up there as fast as I can---without killing myself. 8)
The sun will be good in any case for pictures from the goat trail between Piegan pass and the saddle between Piegan and Pollack.
I love the view looking down the valley towards Angelwing and Grinnell Lake.

Later all!

Just saw your newest photos. A big WOW! You always take such wonderful photos as you have an interest in photography and a good eye for taking shots from some of the most beautiful places in Glacier. Also the ability to do post-processing on your shots to improve them even more. Fun also seeing what was done with the Chalet! And I always enjoy boot shots. Thanks again! :D

Looks like Pete made it to the saddle between Pollock and Piegan. Here's a couple photos from about 2 hrs ago.

I had to edit the post since I relied on my memory instead of what was written. Ok, got a text and at 8700 ft, Pete had some cramps [edit] and turned around.

Jay’s attempt at humor deleted.

Yeah, pretty much everything went wrong yesterday.
Most of it was my fault for not planning well and/or unrealistic expectations.

This picture kinda sums up the day, technically very good, it's very sharp, it's boring. :(
The day was perfect for hikers, clear blue sky, moderate temps, little wind, but...
A terrible day for photography, or at least for the type of images I wanted to do.

Looking more or less north from the saddle between Pollack and Piegan.
8 image panographic shot at ISO 80, f9.5 at 1/250 sec.
Unedited. This is the result of the raw images stitched together in Lightroom and converted to a jpeg.
The original image is large enough to print up to 6 by 2 feet if it was more interesting as a photo.

Gotta go to work.
More on this miserable day later.

Here's a snapshot from the trail near Piegan Pass that turned out "ok".
Kind of a surprise since I was pretty tired and not looking forward to the 4 mile walk back down.

Left to right--Siyeh, Matahpi, and the Going-To-The-Sun Mountains.

Great pictures Pete. Really liked both overlooks, will have to make it there some day. Nice to see the forbidden land of Belly River and Many Glacier.

Tam and Kev!

YeeeHawww Good on you.
 Welcome to the chat, even though you've been here a LONG time 8)

I'm glad you got to Ahern Pass.
Long day for you two since y'all had been up before dawn and already walked a couple miles to bear watch before the hike to Ahern pass.
Loved visiting with you. You and our mutual friend Craig made evening dinner hour a lot of fun.

I met Craig on the HighLine trail early on the morning I hiked out to the chalet.
I had stopped for a breather and take a picture when Craig came up behind me.
We started talkin and when I mentioned my name Craig said he had met a couple at the Village Inn who were looking for a "Pete". :D
Craig said their names were Tammy and Kevin. I told Craig I knew a Tammy and Mike but didn't recall a Tammy and Kevin.

Four hours later I arrived at the chalet to find Craig sitting at one of the picnic tables with a couple.
I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't recognize Tammy and Kevin. :(
Long story short, we had met back in 2015 the day I had the experience video'ing the grizzly sow and two cubs on the Grinnell Glacier trail.
They were "lurkers" back then but said they enjoyed reading my posts and photos, and watching my videos.
And now we meet again!
It's hard for me to express just how much fun it is to have this kind of experience!!

So thanks once more Tam and Kev for making this years trip to Granite Park a truly memorable one!
Next time you're out here, make sure to let me know in advance.
We'll do ShangriLa

You really should do both of those overlooks. The views from both are well worth the effort.
And I have to say I LOVE how you put this:
Nice to see the forbidden land of Belly River and Many Glacier.
The "forbidden land" ROFLMAO!!!!!! Well put :D

More on this later since I've calmed down some from Wednesday.
This pano is an example of why it's just plain dumb to try and do photography mid/late in the day when the view is toward the west.
The light is horrible and all wrong. The left side is really washed out and the cloudless sky is totally "uninteresting".
Nevermind the big ridge off of Pollack blocking the view on the right side.
Going higher up on Piegan would have solved that issue but by that time I'd be shooting directly into the sun.

I'd been to the summit of Piegan 7 times in the past!! I "knew" about the sun issue!!!!
Yet I still convinced myself that, "this time will be different". Sigh. :(
Maybe after this experience it'll sink in that a scene that looks great "in person" doesn't necessarily photograph well.
The proper light is everything when it comes to a good image.
DUH!

Hey Pete,
We left bright and early this morning for our trip back to Missouri. It’s always a sad time for us to leave GNP. However, we have so many great memories and look forward to our next trip.
We hope to take you up on the Shangri la
hike. We have always wanted to hike to Iceberg Lake that way. :D :D Hopefully we will be in better hiking shape next time we see you. This year life snuck up on us before we were ready. We made it hiking but sure felt the extra lbs. I’m not going to admit we are getting older
We look forward to seeing what pictures you post in the future and always enjoy GNP through your reports. You are an inspiration to us!!

Pete, you may be a little harsh on yourself when you criticize your last pano. Yes, it would be a more interesting photo if there were some clouds or if the sun was different. However, looking at it from my eyes (a person who didn’t make it to Glacier at all this year) it is wonderful! I’m just saying, I’m totally enjoying your photos no matter if you are not 100% satisfied with them. Keep them coming. Please. :D
