Waterton Evacuation Alert

Post by teapot57 »

A new wildfire 5 kilometres south of the Waterton townsite has prompted an evacuation alert. The fire is burning in the Boundary Creek Valley and approaching Upper Waterton Lake.

oh no, this is so sad!

The firefighters did an awesome job last year so let's hope they can keep it up this year.

So sad!

When I was riding the boat to Goat Haunt this year, the tour guide spoke at length about the AWESOME job the firefighters did in saving the township last summer and he cited an eye-popping statistic (which I have not attempted to verify from other sources):

He said that in the course of fighting the fire and watering down the township to help protect it from the fires, the level of Waterton Lake dropped by SIX INCHES.

Wow. That's a lot of water!

Prayers that the fire will be contained quickly and that the township and the fire crews will stay safe again.

You bet!
A 6" drop of the lake = ~407 million gallons.

(3.9 sq miles)X(640 acres/Sq mi.)X(1/2ft) = 1248 acre ft. X 326,000 gallons/acre foot =
406,848,000 8)
For those who like that sort of minutia.

Yes, that's a lot of water. And yet, watching the news here (one year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey) I was reminded that we had 27 TRILLION gallons of water in the state of Texas alone. That works out to roughly 1 million gallons of rain for each person living in the state of Texas. I wish I could donate my share of that to Glacier/Wateron right now.

Here's hoping they can protect the townsite again!
