Yellowstone Park Black Bear "Rumble" June 2016

Post by Deb1741 »

On Friday, June 17th my grandson and I pulled over to watch two black bears sows in the meadow below Calcite. Both black bears had a set of two cubs of the year and have been in the Tower/Roosevelt area for about a month. One black bear (the same one with the 3 yearling cubs that made history "chasing" tourists across the Yellowstone River Bridge east of Roosevelt last summer) already had her two babies up a tree (at one time the cubs were laying in a bird's nest). Regulars have nicknamed her Rosie. We didn't see the other black bear with her two cubs come over the road but saw them at the top of the meadow so pulled over. We ended up staying for about 2 hours watching the "Rumble" unfold. The following videos were taken with my point and shoot (hand-held) so they are a little shaky.

Video #1 - Mama bringing her babies across the meadow. At this time, Rosie was downhill and out of our sight.

Video #2- Mama sending the cubs up the tree.

Video #3- Rumble On! The ranger is the person you see in the video at the edge of the road.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a video of the actual fight. I don't know why since it was to the right of us and in plain sight. After the fight. They chased each other uphill and all around. It was quite chaotic.

Video #4- Both mamas coming back down after the rumble was over. Both are just exhausted. Rosie went down and laid underneath the tree that her babies were in. The second mama laid under the tree her babies were in for about 45 minutes before getting up.

Video #5- Another video of the second mama before she laid down.

Video #6- Babies up in the tree.

Video #7- Second mama after she got up. She ended up grazing next to our vehicle. While the bears were resting we drove up to Tower to take a bathroom break. We were able to park on the near side of the road so had front row seats when she finally got up. The ranger said we could stay there and actually used our vehicle as the "no pass zone". The voice you hear at the beginning of the video is the ranger asking us where she was so he could direct people away from her if she turned another direction.

A little after this the Law Enforcement Rangers came and completely cleared out the area. My grandson Braeden was taking quite a few pics with his new lens. When he gets them online I will share some of them.
