Smoke in the Flathead Valley August 2015

Post by PeteE »

Today is August 15 2015

These are snaps out my window driving home on Trumbull Creek road today, Saturday 8-15; they are not works of art. 8)

I put them here so that lurkers could see them as well.
The smoke density, and hence the visibility, is unpredictable.
Smoke can come from more than one direction. I hope it will be better tomorrow, because I'm not staying home if I can help it

The sunrise pics are from Friday morning near the Whitefish Safeway at about 7:30 AM

Trumbull Creek road basically parallels US2 from Rose Creek to MT 40. I drive home on Trumbull Creek to avoid US93, US2, and Whitefish Stage Rd. 8)

SW end of the runway for GPI looking toward Teakettle on the left and the Columbia Mountains on the right. The "gap" leads to Hungry Horse.

Looking East at GPI's tower and Columbia Mtns beyond

"Dust", while present, isn't the major problem right now. Smoke is. The gap to Hungry Horse is just right of sign

I didn't bother taking a picture looking South;nothing to see but smoke :(

I just got home from the park. I got to Logan Pass about 6:00AM and the smoke was bad.
Just like DPratt showed. I cannot see Big Mountain AT ALL from my apartment. I'll post a pic later.
No part of it, and I live less than 2 miles from the base of the mountain.

Visibility at Logan Pass wasn't much better. Smoke thinned out some in the afternoon but was still bad.
Visibility at Many Glacier was awful too.
I did meet two chatters I hadn't met before in the lobby of the Swiftcurrent Inn
Teapot57 and ScoutMom
It was HILARIOUS how that went down. More on that in my report over in Hiking later.
I got some really good video of baby goats playing and frolicking with one another---like 5 minutes worth. They wouldn't stop.
If you like video of goats, especially baby goats, you like this video.
That probably won't get uploaded until late tonight.

later

Here's what it looked like when I got home Thursday evening.
Big Mountain is less than 2 miles from where I was standing taking this picture :(

Last Thursday, Oct 22nd, I was driving to work down Baker Ave here in WF when I saw the sky was this incredible red-orange as the sun was rising.
I took this from the parking lot at work. The color of the sky was changing rapidly as the sun rose over the mountains to the east. I couldn't find a place to get an unobstructed view so I got what I could. 8)
The pictures have not been manipulated. Cam was on iAuto.
Taken at 0753 October 22.

I took this one, then zoomed in for the one below.

You're welcome Jeff.
I hope to have more pictures to share over the fall and winter--inside and outside the park.
It's been raining here lately and not good for pics. We may get some mountain snow tomorrow.
I may go out to Glacier View Peak, across the river from Huckleberry, and get some pics looking into the park.
Good views from Glacier View peak.

I took this one February 4, 2012 from about half way up the mountain.

Here are a couple pics I made driving back from the park yesterday. I drive this road home frequently. I love the open views, the big sky over farm fields. And as some have probably noticed, I like converging and diverging "lines" made by fences, roads, etc. I believe that goes back to high school days and my classes in mechanical and architectural drawing. I loved making perspective drawings with that "vanishing point".

Thanks Jen!
This is one of those pictures that results from dumb luck.
I like the low sun angle combined with the way the road, the fence line, and utility poles all run away from the viewer like they do.
I stopped here because I wanted to get the "look" I got but it was truly a "snapshot".
There was a truck coming behind me and that pickup you see was stopping and starting towards me.
I had to get out of the way!
I was concerned about just trying to get the horizon level and then...Point and shoot. 8)

These fields usually flood for a short while in the spring. When they do there will be huge flocks of all sorts of birds foraging in the shallow standing water.

I'm going to start another thread here in Non Glacier Photos for the "Fall and Winter Around the Flathead" if that's OK.

cheers
