Grand Teton Park May 6-9, 2021

Post by Deb1741 »

After decades of tent camping, I decided to buy a campervan in February. It is perfect for my grandson's and my traveling style and allows us to go on adventures whenever we want too. If I can’t get campground reservations in the park, we can just drive out of the park and stay in a forest service campground or disperse camp somewhere. The campervan is totally self-contained and fits in a regular parking spot so works great in the parks. It's functional "glamping"!

We've done a couple of overnight trips to check the systems out in the campervan and decided to take a longer trip to Yellowstone Park last week as Billings schools had Thursday and Friday off. My 9-year old granddaughter joined Braeden and I for the trip. We were planning on staying in Yellowstone Park the entire trip, but on Friday morning my granddaughter asked if we were going to go to the Tetons. Braeden and I looked at each other and said, "Sure" at the same time. And off we went!

It was a great change of plans and showcases one of the advantages of having a campervan. We were planning on driving out of Yellowstone Park each night to boondock somewhere and were able to do the same thing outside Grand Teton Park.

The wildlife in Grand Teton Park during the time we were there was amazing! Wildlife count for the trip- 17 grizzly bear sightings which included 7 cubs (4 yearling cubs and 3 newborn cubs), 1 coyote, 1 fox, 1 beaver, numerous bison and elk, pelicans, 2 bald eagles, cormorants, and swans.

The highlight of the trip was seeing grizzly bear #399 and her 4 yearling cubs. We saw them 3 times last year starting in May when they first came out of the den, in June, and then again in October. It is beyond amazing that she was able to get all of them through the summer and into the den, yet alone bring all 4 out of the den this spring. Quad litters are very rare to begin with (2% of all litters) and very few make it through the first year. The following are some Facebook videos that I got of the family during our trip.

The following grizzly bear #863 and her two newborn cubs live outside Grand Teton Park. She had just brought them out from her den about 3 days before we got there.

My grandson Braeden uploaded these photos of #863 and her 2 newborn cubs onto his page.

Yesterday, Braeden decided to take an impromptu trip to Yellowstone in hopes of seeing a grizzly bear family that had just come out from the backcountry. The sow has two 2-year old cubs. We have watched her since 2011 when she was 4 years old, but didn't see her last year. He was very excited to find her and take some photos of the family, but his real treat was finally seeing a wolf on a carcass very close up. Over the years, we've had lots of wolf sightings in Yellowstone Park, but most of them have not been exceptionally close. This one was so he was in heaven. He just posted these two photos on his Facebook page.

We'll be back in Grand Teton Park from May 21-26th and in Yellowstone Park from June 10-15th. We would love to make it up to Glacier this year, but I think we will wait until next summer.

Fantastic photos and videos! You have the best luck seeing wildlife. Like the camper also. Have been researching ones very similar. Glad you like it. Looking forward to your next trip and report.

Great stuff and good to hear you got a van. Our neighbor just got what looks like an Amazon van. I’m in the mode of updating the wiring in our camper for some additional solar. (Haven’t bought the panels yet, but I have a good idea of what I want.)
