Yellowstone Park 2019

Post by Deb1741 »

It's been awhile since I posted so thought I'd share some of my favorite pics and videos from trips to Yellowstone Park this year. Unfortunately, I don't do photobucket anymore so I have to link the pics and videos from my facebook account. You can look at them even if you're not on facebook. Sorry for the hassle.

Mountain Goats on Beartooth Pass (July 2 & 4, 2019). I usually see goats on the pass maybe every 3-4th time I go over but this is the first time they were right next to the road. There were 3 different groups in the area with a total of close to 50 including lots of babies. It was fun spending time watching them.

The above grizzly family running to the carcass. About halfway to the carcass the sow stood up and looked around. At first we thought she turned around because she saw the line of people by the road watching but after talking to people that had been there in the morning, I think she got a whiff of the wolves that had been there and it spooked her. Over the course of two days she had fed on the carcass three times and the crowds hadn't bothered her. That morning, four wolves came in and harassed the bears. I saw a video of it and it was pretty intense. A boar grizzly also came in and chased the sow off at one point so I think she was anxious.

The next morning we got to the carcass site just as the family left. We pulled over at the end of a dirt pullout and I got this video as they ran across the road right behind us. (July 4, 2019)

Long but fun video of sandhill crane parents and two babies as they go to their nest for the night. I never knew that the babies slept under the wings of the parents. (June 13, 2019)

Good stuff Deb :)
I loved the bear videos and the sand hill cranes.
Interesting how they kept piling reeds and sticks on their nest.
And the chicks burrowing in under the adult's wings was something I didn't know about.
Thanks for sharing.

I usually don't go to Yellowstone in August because of the heat and crowds but decided to go this year to celebrate my retirement from teaching. I was able to get a cabin at Roosevelt for two nights and at Lake Lodge for two nights so was in the park from August 21 to 25. My grandson couldn't get off from work so it was a solo trip for me. I wasn't expecting to see a whole lot of wildlife but did pretty well due to an abundance of bison carcasses in Lamar Valley.

Final animal count- 10 grizzly bears, 18-20 wolves, 2 coyotes, 3 trumpeter swans, 3 blue herons, numerous hawks, pronghorn antelope, elk, bald eagles and of course, bison, bison, and more bison.

Two bull bison fought to their death a day or so before I got there. They died about 150 feet from each other on a ridge that was a good distance from the road. At sunrise there were reports of 6 grizzly bears on the carcasses along with multiple wolves. I missed that action but got some really good wolf and grizzly action the times I was there.

When I got to the carcass site on Sunday there were two grizzly bears and two wolves still on one of the carcasses. They left after awhile and while I was talking to a friend, a grizzly sow and her two yearling cubs came out of a grove of aspen trees and started walking towards the carcass. My friend left and I was going to leave too but decided to watch the griz family through my scope for awhile. All of a sudden I noticed a black line moving down a hill out of the corner of my eye. I looked through my binoculars and was shocked.....the entire Junction Butte wolf pack was working their way down the hill to the carcass. With this year's pups there about at least 15 members in the pack. I quickly turned my camera on them to video them as they approached the carcass. Remember the sow and the two cubs? Well, they were still walking towards the carcass with the wolves quickly coming up behind them. There was a short altercation behind a tree with the wolves winning. The bears waited until the wolves were done feeding before they went to the carcass. Great action to observe.

Junction Butte wolf pack working their way down the hill to get to the carcass. I've seen a lot of single wolves throughout the years and have seen 4 wolves at the same time but have never seen an entire pack so this was quite a treat for me.

Most of the wolves had left the carcass so the grizzly bear and cubs decided it was their turn. As they neared the carcass the wolves and pups that were still there decided they better get out of there too. 8/25/19

There is a raven in the park that has a tracking collar on it. My oldest grandson and I saw it in June while we were eating lunch at one of the picnic areas. It was there again on Thursday when I was eating lunch so I got this video.
