Bushwhacking in Glacier

Post by jkomiskey »

I had posted an earlier thread about getting around glacier but have since visited a backcountry permit office to change my itinerary. Is there any cool "unmarked" hikes in the belly area of the park? We are going to ELF for one night, MOL for 2 nights, and GAB for one night. The ranger station suggested going up to Bear Mountain observatory, and said that the trail is unmarked but we could venture further. Anything else like that or anything that is a must see in that area would be awesome. The more strenuous the better! Thank you!

As you've got two nights at MOL, I'm assuming you're well aware of Margaret Lake: https://www.summitpost.org/margaret-lak ... ful/842571

You could also venture up to the Sue Lake bench, if you really want to wander. There are plenty of good posts on here with pictures/details.

Jason,

Thanks we actually did not know about Margaret Lake! That is a great suggestion that we will definitely be exploring. Thank you!

Jake,

It's one of the jewels of the park. Personally, my favorite lake in Glacier.

Look in the hiking forum, a few posts down. There was a thread taking about the route to get there. Pete had a great photo showing the path, but it seems to have disappeared. Maybe he could repost or send it to you via PM.

Enjoy!

Yeah, I think it got removed because it was a google earth image I had edited.
I'll get it to him.
Margaret Lake is a beautiful spot and the hike is easy from MOL, itself a gorgeous location.
So if I had two days at MOL, I'd seriously consider going up to Margaret lake.
Great waterfall up there too.

All the rain we've had may make the route brushey--and it is good bear country.
The good news is the general route is pretty easy to follow--I think it's only about 1 1/2 miles to the foot of the lake by the falls.
You may have time to do Margaret Lake and then explore up the Stoney Indian Pass trail the same day.

I got your PM. I'll find that image or do a new one and get it to you either as a PM or email.

Pete, if you still have the image I would love to see it too! We have a night at MOL so we're hoping to make it up to Margaret.
