Lincoln Peak on Gunsight Trail

Post by ThomasMore »

Considering the fact that we are going up a 1000 feet over Lincoln Pass, is it worth the scramble off Gunsight Trail to divert up to the Lincoln Peak? I'm not sure if these old legs can add on the steep diversion going up or down. Does anyone have information about heading off the trail to go up to Lincoln Peak? I have heard that the views are incredible.
Thanks, Tom

Yes it would be recommended if time (and energy) allow. There is no routefinding skills involved. the route is quite obvious from Lincoln Pass.

I agree. Well worth the view assuming nice day.
This shot is from about half way up the ridge. Took me maybe 10-15 minutes to this point.
Higher is better. Go if you can do it.

Fantastic! Thank you for your input. It is much appreciated.

What did you do with your packs? I'm assuming that the trail is pretty steep.

My sister was ragged out after the morning hike in the snow up towards Sperry Glacier, so I went alone with my day pack.
So leaving my pack wasn't an issue. Are you day hiking or backpacking?
Will you be hiking through to Lake McDonald? Or staying at the back country CG(assuming they have it open this year)?

On the first night we will be camping at Gunsight Lake and the second night at Lake Ellen Wilson, then to McDonald Lodge.

If you are backpacking over Lincoln Pass, leaving your pack to climb the peak will be a problem. I don't think there is a bear pole or bear box and it is not legal to leave it unattended at the intersection. There are lots of goats and critters that would love to have a chew on it if you did.

Just to be clear...I didn't mean to imply it'd be ok to leave your pack at the pass.
The animals there would be all over it.
Getting up to the place where I took those images posted above isn't that hard.
The potentially bad news is you'd have ~8 miles left to go, dropping about 4000 ft on the way. :(

Maybe you'll get lucky and someone will be around and won't mind watching your gear while you run up a ways for a picture.
There will likely be people working around the chalet and maybe will take "breaks" up at the pass.
Chalet employees used to go up there to take breaks and make phone calls.
