Essex Camping?

Post by ohioguy »

Got a idea, leave car at Amtrak in East Glacier.
Ride train to Essex, then do PAR,UPP,ISA,COB,2MEDCG,Then back to east glacier.

I cant find anywhere in Essex to camp or stay other than Walton Inn.

Is there a place to stay other than Walton Inn?

I can't recall if there is another place in Essex. Perhaps someone on the list will know or perhaps a call to the Izaak Walton Inn will provide that answer.

I think the nearest campground would be the Flathead National Forest (if that is the correct entity) campground at Devil Creek about 5-10 miles east of Essex on U.S. 2.

Hope you have a great trip and hope you will post a report of your trip.

I think Lyman is right. I don't know of any other place to stay in Essex.

While it's not camping and I haven't been to the park yet this year to know if it's still open, isn't there a small motel a mile or so from Isaac Walton called the Half Way Hotel or motel?

You're talking about the place that is, and now I think was, the "Half-Way Motel"--part of the Essex Post Office building.
You can see the building on Google Maps street view.
I never paid much attention to it driving by. I don't recall seeing any cars parked there.
But then I don't go US2 in the summer so it's possible it's seasonal.
Call the Essex Post Office tomorrow. (406) 888-5650
If they don't know, who does?

The Halfway House was purchased by the owner of the Izaak Walton Inn and was being remodeled. I'm not sure if it is open yet as a motel. Call the Izaak Walton Inn to find out.

Re camping near Essex:
There is an RV park several miles west of Essex on US 2. Can't remember the name though.

The Glacier Haven always looks like a nice place to stay, either at the campground or the Inn. However, be aware that they have a strict cancellation policy which is explained on their website.

There are many places around Glacier which have very customer-friendly cancellation policies. I can think of the Circle R and the Mountain Pine in East Glacier and the last I knew, the GPI policy was quite good.

Also be aware that the Glacier Haven is quite a ways down the road (west on US 2) from Essex.
