Need some recommendations for a place to stay

Post by theflying6969 »

Hey Chatters,

I will be working around the eastern side of Glacier next week (although sadly not in the actual park) and am looking for some recommendations on where to stay. I will be working along the border entrances (Port of Chief Mountain and Port of Piegan) and am wanting to stay a night relatively close to these places. I am thinking either some place in Babb or possibly the Duck Lake Lodge. Anybody have some suggestions or recommendations? I've stayed in East Glacier quite a bit but that is a bit further than I'd really want to drive...St. Mary could be a possibility as well. Thanks in advance!

At $159.00/night for a single it ought to be great 8)
Not open till May 25th.
Nothing open in St Mary or Babb when I was last there. Everything was boarded up.
Duck Lake is open and that's about it till Memorial Day weekend at the earliest.

After a little researching I found out about just as much...nothing open for a few weeks. Any experiences staying at Duck Lake? The reviews I've read have generally not been favorable in the slightest.

Pete (and others),

Is Thronson's motel at Babb open now? I understand from a facebook post that the store opened around May 11 but the post said nothing about the motel. Telephone number is 402-732-5530 I believe.

I went through East Glacier and West Glacier on the westbound Empire Builder on May 4th. From what I could see from the train, places on US. 2 in East Glacier were mostly still closed. At West Glacier, the Glacier Highland motel looked like it might be open but the gas station and restaurant looked closed.

When my daughter and I were in Glacier in early June 2007 most places were open by that time.

Lyman, you may be right.
Thronson's Motel might be open by now.
When I drove through Babb on May 8th, every building was still boarded up tight.
But that was 2 weeks ago.
Worth calling to see if they are open now.

Ended up being able to get a room at Thronsons last night...I think I'm probably the first guest of the season! Room was excellent and the owners were so nice and helpful. Recommend it for sure!

Good news. Thanks for the info.
What are the posted rates at Thronsons if you know them?
Anything else open in Babb?

When we stayed at Thonson's in July 2014, I think we paid about $90 per night but I can't recall if that was before or after taxes.

When my daughter and I stayed at Thronson's in early June 2007 we had the only room occupied which surprised me as I didn't realize (until then) just how slow things are that time of the year. We stopped by the store in the morning, saw they had a vacancy and thought we ought to grab it while it was still available. As it turns out, we didn't need to be in such of a rush.

The rate was $113 with taxes which was a tad pricey, but so is everything else around Glacier and was also one of the only places that was actually open this early at least on the east side. That being said, the room was excellent (although no wifi and spotty cell phone service at that) and the owners were incredibly pleasant to deal with.

Nothing else was open in Babb. The owners said the Duck Lake Lodge was probably the closest place for food that would be open this time of year but I imagine lots of places will start to open after this long weekend. I drove from Kalispell around the west side of Glacier and up the east side and St. Mary also appeared to be 'closed' for now, but there were some places open in East Glacier however.
