Paul,
I really enjoyed your Winds trip. Had in mind possibly trying to link the Winds to my two Yellowstone backpacks in September (Canada being closed), but the distance between is too great. So I hope you are able to develop another fine itinerary.

(From someone who has haunted car reservation sites: best to get that in place soonest.
Agencies sold down inventory last year, in absence of business travel (and now chip shortage). Cars are being transferred from less in demand locations that business travelers don't use to fill the needs of major airports, so rates are rising everywhere.
Think $200-400 per day.)

Hi Selkie,

Thanks for the tip on car reservations. If it's that high per day, I don't know if I could pull the trigger for a 7 day rental. I look into getting this done soon. Still wish I could go to Glacier though. My BC permit application was rejected today, ugh!

So yesterday I got my second and final permit. I had submitted two permit applications, one for a 2-3 night trip within a one week date range, and the second for a 3 night trip anytime between August 1 and September 15, but in the notes I carved out the date range that I used for the first permit and specifically asked them not to give me anything during that time.

Neither permit that I received was close to what I requested, and they are both one night permits for the exact same date! I got one night at REH, and on the second permit I got the SAME night at Lake Isabel.

Not quite what I was looking for, but you win some, you lose some.

Sorry, Paul. That’s a bummer, especially since it’s been awhile since you’ve been to Glacier.

That's very weird Tina. How could they make that mistake?
Dear Backcountry Permit Applicant,
We have processed your Advance Reservation Application and were unable to confirm any of your itinerary choices.

Got this yesterday regarding my other app.
But I still have the 3 nights at ATL so no whining from me.

FWIW....The car rental business working out of KGPI has some problems, and apparently KGPI isn't alone.
Among the challenges that car rental companies face at the moment is "limited supply".
Or often they might have the wrong "mix" of models available. In some cases, they sold off SUVs__POPular with tourist families-- during covid
Aand kept more "business model cars"--Not popular for tourists with families.
Many rental outfits sold off inventory a year ago due to covid-19. So there's an overall shortage of vehicles available right now.
Limited supply facing high demand. So best get working on your rental, if you don't have one yet.

Hey Tina,

What date were the permits for? Which one do you plan to use?

I guess the Rangers have thrashed through the March 17th reservation requests as the Advance Reservation Availabitly link is "live" again on Glacier NP's Wilderness Camping Advance Reservations page.

It may have been "live" for a while. I hadn't checked it for some time.

I haven't received the unavailble email for the second attempt I sent in on April 17th so I guess that means they haven't gotten to it yet.

HA!

Just got the reject email ...so they've gotten to April 17th. It should go pretty fast from here as there doesn't seem to be much of anything left on the more popular trails.

I was concerned i had no received any word from NPS re. my permit application by mid-May, so i sent an email to the BC office. They informed me the itinerary approval had been sent to me gmail account a month earlier. Upon investigating, i found it was not in my spam folder, but it was in my Trash folder. My own bad. But the good news is, i got my desired itinerary: the Kintla to Bowman horseshoe, Sept 17-22. Now we just need to hope the early season snows don't foil us.

Forgot to give the final tally - 9518 site nights. So with 3700 applications, roughly 2.5 nights per application (not counting groups >4 and rejected applications).

Does anyone have any information on how long the Glacier NP Advance Reservation Availability Web Page will be down?

https://www.nps.gov/applications/glac/b ... bcmap.html

After getting the spinning wheel of death for a prolonged amount of time, eventually an "Apology Page" is displayed.

Just to follow up on this... just spoke to Karen in the Apgar Backcountry Office. She asked another Ranger about the status of the web page and was told they expected it to be back up no later than Monday.

So why do I care about this?

I had noticed about the only place that had a doable 4-day itinerary for the first few days in September was Logging Lake. "What the heck", I thought, "I'll put in a request and have something in place." The idea being to attempt to improve the situation when I walked into the Backcountry Office in September.

I put in the request on June 7th and checked the Advance Reservation Availability Webpage daily to see if my request still had a chance. The last time I checked was the day before the webpage got lost in space and nothing had changed - I think this was Thursday. So when I get an "Unavailable" email on Friday and I'm unable to check the webpage ...well, it wouldn't be the first time (or the second) over the past 18 years that I've gotten an "Unavailable" email when there actually were itineraries that fit my request.

The email is probably legit but it does seem a bit conincidental that everything was looking good until I couldn't verify the situation any longer.
Anyway, I'll know more when the webpage is resurrected. Hopefully that will be soon.

...and now I know. The Backcountry Advance Reservation Webpage is back up and the itinerary I requested - and for which I received a "Unavailable Email" - seems to be available from Sept 2 - Sept 5. (LOF, ADA, GRA, LOF)

I'll see if I can get that rectified Sunday morning by calling the Backcountry Office in Apgar again.

Just got off the phone with Ranger Dillon. He thinks he can give me the Logging Lake itinerary but he needed to check with a Supervisor that wasn't available right then. I should hear back soon.

Ranger Dillon indicated that earlier in the season the Rangers had been told that Logging Lake Trail (and perhaps others) would be inaccessable during some time periods due to major construction planned on the Inside North Fork Road. Since that edict was issued, the construction bid came in at double what had been budgeted... Ranger Dillon thought the itinerary could be granted since they didn't have enough money for project but he needed to check with a boss.

...Ranger Dillon called back as I was writing this. They have granted the itinerary and I should receive my reservation via email shortly.
