JayAndersen wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 5:27 am Awesome news about the East side, I really missed it last year. Not that I'm sick of the West side of the park... :)

I'll make my first trip around Memorial day again, probably won't be able to spend a significant amount of time in East / Many until September though.
If you need bear spray, don't buy any. I got plenty.

Regarding ticketed entry. I think it's easy to see what happens.

-People show up at the park and have no idea about ticketed entry. They get mad and if they're in line, it'll slow entry.
-They'll show up the next morning at 5:30 am.
-By mid-July, Logan Pass will be full by 6:00 or 6:30 and the people with tickets will be mad because there's no parking.
-It should make for good sunrise pictures.

I wouldn't be surprised if something like your scenario happened.

I've been watching YouTube videos recently related to visiting Glacier Park.
And it's amazing how little many of these van life and armchair "travel experts" actually know about the park.
"People are stupid" as my man George Carlin often said.
And he was/is right 8)

The park service should put one of those BIG portable electronic signs up in that pull over area BEFORE the turn under the RR tracks.
And in the AMTRAK parking lot for east bound people on US2

"TICKETED ENTRY BETWEEN 6AM AND 5PM"

Hopefully that would divert those without tickets.
Or am I the stupid one for believing people actually read signs? 8)

You would think that would work. However, there is no accounting for people who read signs and go on anyway. "We've driven so far, maybe this doesn't apply to me" sort of attitude. Could end up being a disappointment for people who didn't check ahead to see what the situation is. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

It looks like Glacier is going to require that tickets be bought in advance to use the GTSR park shuttles this year.

https://missoulian.com/news/local/glaci ... 5b4a6.html

According to the article the ticket start time must be specified to within a 1 hour interval. I suppose it might be possible to know in advance that you want to catch a ride to the trailhead in the morning but I rarely know to within an hour when I will be finishing a hike. So catching a shuttle from the Loop back up to Logan after walking the Highline to Granite and then down to the road which I have done several times would be almost impossible with this system. The whole idea of making 75% of shuttle reservations available 6 months ahead of time seems pretty useless to me.

It looks like shuttle stops are very limited. No shuttle stops at trailheads, so I'm not sure the shuttle will work very well for hikers.

Nice find .... where to even start ....

So you have to know June 1st exactly when and where you want a shuttle 3 months later ?

Isn’t the purpose of the shuttles to reduce traffic and parking lot filling ? This type of system just encourages people to drive their car in.

I get they are trying to manage with reduced capacity with today’s restrictions (social distancing) but July and August I expect much of that to be peeled back.

How does a backcountry hiker on an itinerary longer than 3 days use the shuttle at the end of their trip? With the rules as written, they can’t because they can’t validate it in advance at the entrances. So now you’re driving more overnight parking so people can get out ... well until that is outlawed as well. On top of that, now one not only needs a camp/hotel reservation but now also a shuttle reservation ? What if June 1st they all sell out in 10 minutes and you were unavailable to get on the website at that time ?

Eliminating stops at the Loop, Siyeh, Jackson Glacier Overlook is just dumb. Those stops cost almost no time and are often skipped. This is basically a FU to hikers.

What is the point of adding a transfer stop at Sun Point from the East side? They can take the big busses up the east side, there is no reason to add a get on / get off event on the east side.

It seems like they are trying to make it perfect and efficient for 10% while screwing over the other 90%. I say just leave it alone and warn everyone it’s going to be crowded and there will be long lines and potential delays. Locking people out isn’t right.

The solution is adding bus capacity and having a decent wage to fill the positions.

They didn't sell out within 10 minutes, they "sold out within minutes" for June according to the link. I translate that to within 2 minutes. Basically everyone was waiting to hit enter, and a bunch of people ready and waiting to hit enter didn't get a ticket because the servers couldn't handle the volume. 10,000 people were trying for the tickets!

My guess is that many people will get up at 4 am, enter the park at 5:00 and 5:30 and those with vehicle permits will be pissed that there's no parking spots left (at 9 am). (I'm thinking Logan Pass. What's the park's fix. Shut the gates?

There's about 5 layers of pissing people off going on. Can't get a ticket to enter. Can't coordinate a backpack. Can't hike some of great trails. If you get the ticket, there's no guarantee of a parking spot (my prediction). Lets say you want to hike Gunsight to McDonald or Siyeh to Many Glacier. That's damn near impossible. Also, people not having access to GTTSR will put added pressure on Many Glacier and the North Fork.

Maybe enough people getting pissed off will discourage people from coming in future years.
