Post by calicotraveler »

I don't know if this has been posted yet or not but this is an encounter with a mountain lion in Glacier. The lion appears to have an growth of some kind on its jaw. Perhaps this is why the unusual behavior.

Is there a reason the author of this article didn't name the trail??????????????
How much effort would it have taken to get this information?

I think the video is from 2015 (if you view it in YouTube, that's when it was posted). Hope the cat got some care for his abscess. Not sure why it made the rounds on the internet now. I got a notice about it, as well, this morning and watched the video embedded in the article. Then I thought the to click on the YouTube link in case there were comments about which trail. That's when I noticed the post date. No luck figuring out the trail.

I wondered if that might not have been a new event. Also agree with Pete with it being strange the trail wasn't named. This was the first time I had heard about it though.

Trevor Rasmussen was on Day 2 of a 1,200-mile hike of the Pacific Northwest Trail in Glacier National Park in Montana when he was stopped in his tracks by a mountain lion sitting on the trail some 50 feet ahead of him.

The trail starts at Belly River trailhead, so likely he was between Belly River and Stoney Indian Pass, and perhaps not too far from Belly River Ranger Station.
Map of PNT in Glacier NP:

He should have expected encounters with large fauna. Others have encountered mountain lions and grizz on PNT, and under less favorable circumstances.

Pete,
Since you have hiked almost all the trails, I am surprised you didn't recognize this trail immediately

You know, come to think of it, I thought I recognized one of the trees the lion came around.
Of course I wasn't sure, and it might have seemed like I was bragging had I said so.

:D It looks kind of like that trail with the trees and the green plants growing on either side of it. You know the one! :D
