Bear Safety, Behavior, and Bear Spray

Post by PeteE »

I carry bear spray year round here in Montana when I'm out and about taking pictures or just enjoying being outdoors.
Many of you will soon be heading out into bear country when you visit Glacier National Park or other places where bears live.
Here are two videos on bear safety, behavior, and how to use bear spray that I found to be pretty good.

Part 1 on Bear safety and behavior

Part 2 Bear Spray and how to use it

I carry my bear spray on my pack's sternum strap where it is immediately available.
My closest encounter which was close enough 8)

You can almost smell her breath! Beautiful, and I'm sure it made your knees knock a little bit.

Actually, I wasn't too worried about being attacked. I wasn't freaking out and screaming, etc. like the people below me a minute later.
And the bears left the trail heading up the mountain before they got to them.
There wasn't much I could do other than get out of their way by backing up on that little "shelf".
My main concern was getting a good video clip.
That said, it was a great thrill to have them run by me like that.

I like seeing animals close up, including the bears.
There were lots of people going both ways on the Grinnell trail that day so I hung around here until the bear moved off.

Better not to surprise a bear, even a young one.
I've seen people walk by sheep, bears, goats, and moose and never know they're there.
So put your "ear buds" away and pay attention to your surroundings.
You'll see more wildlife and maybe avoid a truly bad encounter. 8)

Wow, great video. Just how close were you?

I've spent more time in Yellowstone with many warnings about the tame appearing, but not always tame Bison. Twice I've turned around to find one had just crested a rise less than 10 feet away. Both times they saw me before I saw them but they just ignored me as I more or less froze and nothing happened, not even the good photo op as I didn't want to do anything to even possibly irritate them.
