Re: 2013 - Swimming all Named Lakes in the Park

Thanks Teapot! Looks like I have some more reading to do. I’ve struggled a bit with the website, where one time I only see a handful of entries, and with your link there are 4 pages. I really like the posts- a good blend of storytelling and route information, with the route information striking a go...

Re: 2013 - Swimming all Named Lakes in the Park

I stumbled on this when going down the rabbit hole from the lost trails discussion, specifically Miche Wabun. Here is his blog: Link Unfortunately, last I checked the majority of the lakes are not covered. Regardless, really cool goal and accomplishment. Really wish some of the obscure ones were cov...

Here are the dispersed camping rules for Nyack/Coal Creek and elsewhere.

Re: The Sharing Shack

Went for some bear spray Monday, found none. Dropped off a fuel canister, bear spray and lighter today and found two tubs of bear spray, go figure. Really cool concept.

Re: Dispersed Camping

Thanks Ralph! It turns out there are two sets of rules: one for Nyack area and one for everywhere else. I took some pictures of the two papers and I’ll post that. Essentially the Nyack rules are reasonable for ‘on trail’ dispersed camping (50 yds) and non-Nyack (1/2 mile) are reasonable for ‘mountai...

Re: Dispersed Camping

Thanks Orin! You’re on it - I’m wanting to preserve the lakes if possible (COB, ISA, BEA). As a clarification, the cut bank pass thought would be at the Nyack trail intersection, not the pass itself, which would save a couple miles each way to Upper Nyack for an established camp- which from what I u...

Dispersed Camping

Anyone have any experience with dispersed camping? I’m thinking about asking for next week, but was curious for some insight: How strict is the Nyack zone enforced? I currently have COB-ISA-PAR-COA-BEA-OLD. I am looking to consolidate ISA-BEA into two days instead of three. Ideally I think I’d stop ...

Re: Fifty Mountain Closed for bears. 🐻

Looking at the availability maps, three of the most popular backcountry routes are currently closed. Dawson-Pitamakin is closed due to bears. Not just the Old Man Lake camp but the entire Dry Fork. Glad I got my trip in early in the summer while it was still open. Gunsight-Sperry is also closed alt...

Re: Bear Canister?

Edit to add, indeed they specify a bear canister for undesignated camping:
An Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) approved food storage device is required for all at-large camping.

Re: Bear Canister?

Great question and interested to see the responses- I don’t recall guidance for GNP but wouldn’t be surprised if it is in the backcountry guide. There certainly would need to be guidance for dispersed or off trail camping like in Nyack area - I wonder if that is canister or hang. My experience with ...

Re: Outside article on GNP, difficulties for thru-hikers

Jay, you hit on a good point that I’ve been meaning to make a post on. The purpose of the NPS isn’t completely for visitors “today”, rather: The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and insp...

Re: Outside article on GNP, difficulties for thru-hikers

Interesting article, thanks for sharing. I’m usually in the park in September, so lots of CDT interactions. In general, I empathize with the CDT’ers that how can one possibly plan months in advance when they’ll arrive for a permit, and multiply that times however many parks they cross. But NPS is fo...

Re: What Just Happened to Stoney Indian Campsite?

Agree that’s pretty lame, especially with plenty of time to fix it. ELF is the only site I’ve seen with multiple boxes, so I don’t see the issue with 3 sites working with one box. For instance fifty mountain had one for 5 sites (until they tore it out last year). Wonder if it was something else (mul...

Re: Modifying Itinerary when Actually Picking Up a Permit

Hi Orin, thanks for the intel on changing permits at walk-in. Exciting times to visit glacier early season- I hope you enjoyed your trip and to hear more about it. Here is my speculation: NPS is official but the system uses REC to process- so if it’s not available on REC then it won’t work. I say th...
