Re: Camera for backpack trips

I don't like taking pictures using a back display on the camera back because it's difficult to frame a shot and I find it tough to see the subject well. I know what you mean about P&S cams.... But I still like my little SonyHX-10V P&S. Sony now makes a better version of the HX-10V. I think ...

Re: Stores inside Glacier NP

If you are coming from Great Falls or points east on the Highline, I would stop in Browning at one of the stores there. The Glacier Trading Co. is OK. I'm just not a big fan of anything in East Glacier. Dunno why, but I'm not. If coming from the Kalispell airport, I'd stop at the Columbia Falls Supe...

Re: Highway US 89 between Choteau and Dupuyer

We Canadians love that "fast lane" and Montana's 80 mph speed limit. Gotta get home with our bargain American purchases (although less of a bargain now with out deflated dollar). The view Rocky Mountain Front was nice today coming across the Valier crossover(MT44). It looked like you coul...

Re: Highway US 89 between Choteau and Dupuyer

Orin I know what you mean about road building today. Like you, I love the old highways that roll over the hills. 8) The new style is a lot safer though with the huge increase traffic over the years. Driving that part of US89 is a lot like the MT141 short cut from MT200 to US 12 via Helmville. I lov...

Re: Highway US 89 between Choteau and Dupuyer

I would add that I saw a wide diversity of birds, mostly waterfowl, driving through the Freezeout WMA just south of Choteau. Everything from pelicans down to both redwing blackbirds as well as the yellow headed blackbirds. All sorts of ducks, coots, cranes, hawks, geese, you name it. I would guess th...

Highway US 89 between Choteau and Dupuyer

Normally I like to drive this road if I'm traveling on the East side since it's a little more scenic than the Interstate 15. Squeeze, at 20 years old and 271,000+ mils, doesn't like turning more than 2000RPM --55mph in 5th gear. And I don't like taking him over 2500RPM which is about 65mph. Driving ...

Re: Realistic Expectations

You should be able to get a good trip(s) doing a walk up. I didn't put in for a reservation this year. I plan on using the walk up process. I've gotten some good trips in the past walking up. The key is to arrive at the Backcountry Office early and be first in line if possible. That may require your...

Yellowstone Bison

I'm not surprised this happened. Bison are often perceived as less of a threat than bears because they don't look "look" dangerous when they're just standing around "chewing their cud", or whatever. Well, they are... http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/05/17/girl-16-gored-by-bison-in-...

Re: Two Med

Maybe I can figure a way to get over there this coming weekend.

Snowing everywhere on and off as I drove over here to Lewistown today.
Nothing accumulating at low elevations; some in a mountains.

Cold rain here in Lewistown. On the way to Billings tomorrow for business.

Montana Sapphires

I made this video last weekend on Mothers Day. http://youtu.be/o8WIypfWkk4 It's a bit long at 16 minutes but it's hard to make something like this shorter--for me anyhow 8) I've loved doing stuff like this since I was a kid, and I still like doing it. I've never found anything valuable that I know o...

Re: Flathead Spring Gobblers

I forgot you replied here Dave. I may do that, maybe next spring. If you get close enough to gobblers when they're strutting, sometimes you can hear that very low pitched "drumming/booming" sort of noise they make. And hear them vibrating their wings as they drag them. Kind of fun to watch...

Re: Many Glacier webcam is operational

I'd "adjust" that camera in a heart beat if I believed I could do it without getting caught.
However, being tasered, shackled, and hauled off to Judge Malloy's courtroom in Missoula is not on my bucket list! 8)

Re: 2015 Permits

I always understood the one night limit to mean consecutive nights. You may be right on that Jen. Good question and I don't know. I'm speculating. I did the math and assuming that they rejected the August dates, but allowed September... If she allowed 14 days in September for a three night trip, th...

Joybird: I'm just as surprised as you are that you didn't get that itinerary, but then do you think this restriction hurt your chances: Regarding Cobalt Lake: One night limit, per trip, in July and August Your nights aren't consecutive, but it's still 2 nights in one trip. Could they have rejected y...

Re: Sun Road Management Plan

Hey Dave; Well, not everyone enjoys waiting in lines like you do. 8) My point about making the gate for admissions only was to to reduce the wait and traffic backup at the entrance. Let traffic disburse from the 4way Stop and the visitor center area. It would help if they had a longer second lane at...
