Re: Bears hump

Bear's Hump trail is not open. It is being re-constructed. We hiked the Bertha Lake trail on Wednesday. It is open and had a lot of people on it. Most of the trail is through burned area but the area around Lower Bertha Falls, the trail past the Upper Falls and the area around Bertha Lake did not bu...

Re: 2019 "Snaps" Around Gracier National Park...plus

Interesting pictures from the trail to Sexton Glacier. They help give a perspective on just how huge the whole Baring Creek valley is. A friend and I took that trail toward Sexton Glacier back in the early 1980s - the only time I have done that. I am sure you were closer to the glacier than I was an...

Day Seven – Two Medicine and Upper Two Medicine Lakes On Friday we decide to hike in the Two Medicine area. Nina has joined us and Angela and Wendy also join us today. We arrive in mid-morning but did find parking in one of the lots. We start hiking on the trail along the north side of two Medicine ...

Day Six – Red Eagle Lake Trail We were looking for something not very strenuous today. Tara and I drove to the Old Ranger Station near St. Mary and then started on the Red Eagle Lake Trail. We hiked a couple miles on the trail then turned back. On the way back we took the trail past the Beaver Ponsd...

Re: MarxMN 2018 Trip Report - Better Late than Never

Indiana hiker, The climb to the old lookout on Divide is probably less than one mile (as the crow flies) from the parking area. There is no real trail but the route is obvious. The lookout was still in place as of late July 2018. However, it is in bad shape. Much of the floor is broken out. Parts of...

Day Five – Firebrand Pass MacKenzie and I met Rosie and drove though East Glacier toward Marias Pass on Highway 2. We had decided to try the Firebrand Pass hike, a trail none of us had hiked before. Leaving the parking lot along Highway 2 we entered through an opening in the fence and then started o...

Re: MarxMN 2018 Trip Report - Better Late than Never

Jay - We climb Divide fairly frequently. It is not the most exciting climb but relatively easy. I think three of the last four times I have been to the top it has been buggy. Last year was the worst - none of us could tolerate the bugs long enough for a picture or anything else on top. We joked that...

Pete,

The low clouds in the pictures on the way to Logan Pass are fascianting.

And I agree about Piegan Mountain - much better looking from the trail than from the road.

Day Three – Divide Mountain On Monday we met up with Miss Guiness and Heff from the Chat Page and Jen and a couple family members to climb Divide Mountain. The old fire lookout about half way up Divide is in bad shape but still standing. https://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee300/MarxMN/Glacier%20201...

Re: MarxMN 2018 Trip Report - Better Late than Never

Paul, Being at Iceberg Lake with no other people was very nice. There was no noise. And we hiked out on the Iceberg Lake trail that had no other hikers The only person we met was another park ranger waiting for a group to come down from Ptarmigan Lake. I was concerned as we came down from Shangri-la...

Day Two – Shangri-la I volunteered to coordinate a hike over Shangri-la as one of the Glacier Mountaineering Society family day events for GMS week. Four of us showed up in the Swiftcurrent parking lot for the climb and hike early Sunday morning. It was a beautiful day – sunny and not too hot. We st...

MarxMN 2018 Trip Report - Better Late than Never

The 2018 trip to Glacier Park started with a late evening flight from Minneapolis to Great Falls on Friday, July 27. I stayed in Great Falls that Friday night. Saturday morning, I headed to Smith’s in Great Falls for supplies for the week and then to East Glacier for the Glacier Mountaineering Socie...
