Heat, Smoke and Finally Relief

Our 2023 Glacier hiking trip was August 12 -20. We arrived to hot temperatures with highs in the mid-90s the first several days. We also had smoky skies and smoky air a couple days. Then a cold front moved through with a little rain and cooler air – a great relief. Temperatures in the 90s are not gr...

Re: Backpacking between Granite Park Chalet and Sperry Chalet

Another idea could be, after the night at Granite Park, come back out from Granite Park to Logan Pass, take the shuttle to Jackson Glacier Overlook, then one night at Gunsight Lake, one night at Lake Ellen WIlson and one night at Sperry Campground before Sperry Chalet. Staying at Sperry Campground s...

Re: Snow Moon Basin

I was in the Snow Moon Basin in 2014 also but have not tried it since. It is surprising that the terrain has changed that much.

Re: Visitation Statistics

Zozeppelin, Interesting information - thanks for your work. On the numbers of cars turned away the hunrgy Horse News quoted a park spokesperson as saying it was about 400 a day last year on the Going to the Sun Road. That quote is in about the tenth paragraph of the article at this link: https://hun...

Re: Summer 2022: I’m Getting Older But I Still Got It In Me

Yes, that was a big Dodge Ram pickup - the best rental deal I could find. Other than being a bit awkward to park it worked well. And here is what Iceberg Lake looked like from above three days after you hiked there. https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/ee300/MarxMN/F-21_Iceberg_Lake.JPG?width=590&...

Re: Crowds

I was in the park July 27 - Aug. 2. I would agree with Ear Mountain. We fouhnd plenty of parking spaces at Logan Pass at 6:45 on one day. At Sun Point parking was available at 9:15 (a fairly large parking lot). Other east side parking places along GTTS Road were filling up earlier.

Re: Success with Chalet reservations for 2022?

A member of our group was successfull in getting a Granite Park Chalet reservation for two nights for late July 2022. It also includes the geology hike to Ahern Pass - the same hike that Tibber described. We were there in 2021 as well but about 10 days earlier than Tibber and did not cross the Ahern...

Re: Wind River 2021

Paul, Sorry the weatehr for your trip was so challenging. It was so different from the weatehr we had in Glacier July 28 - Aug. 5. But then it started raining in Glacier later in Augst too. You made the best of an unfortunate situation. And I bet you were relieved to be out when you saw that weather...

Paul,

Thanks for the report. That natural bridge is interesting - a bridge for water and some animals. I am interested in how the weather turned out.

Re: Jackson Overlook TH to Reynolds Creek Campsite 8-7-2021

Thanks for the trip report. Such a contrast between the weather you had in Glacier and what we had a few days earlier. We had warm temperatures and almost no rain - just a few sprinkles on the tent one night and drizzle near Cobalt Lake on our hike there. But the weather in Glacier is unpredicable. ...

Re: Moving To Florida Spring 2022

Pete, I thihk you are making a good decision. Family is important. And I certainly recognize that Glaicer and the Flathead Valley have changed in recent years. I,too, am afraid the causual, unplanned trip to the park may no longer be possible. I will miss your pictures and reports on Glacier. You ga...

I hope the biopsy results are good too.

Thanks for the pictures. I like the St. Mary Lake sunrise. The earlier St. Mary Lake (Wild Goose Island) sunset is neat too.
