I'd recommend reserving something in advance if possible, so then you have something in your back pocket at minimum, and at best you have something you can work with and modify when picking up your permit. I do think the lottery (which I am in favor of) adds to the number of applications being submitted. With the lottery, why not try to increase your chances by having each group member try for a desired route? So then you have one group potentially getting more than one reservation at the initial dra...

Scott, I've had the same experience ..... permit denied when the chosen itinerary was clearly available. Called the rangers and they fixed it, but this just shouldn't ever happen.
