Re: Ole Creek - new trail

I wouldn't want to see the Reynold mountaineer's trail be made into an official trail. Not because it's too dangerous but because it will bring more people (a lot more people) into that area which is for the most part pretty peaceful. I understand your point of view Paul and I'm sympathetic to it, ...

Re: Ole Creek - new trail

I wouldn't look for new trails any time soon. They don't have the manpower to patrol and maintain the current trail system. And that problem is exacerbated by the nationwide problem of people not wanting to work. There was talk in one of those long range plans that published recently of making the R...

Re: Virginia hiker not heard from in nearly a week found dead in Glacier National Park

I've been to the Grinnell Overlook a number of times. I've also climbed well up into the rocks on either side of the overlook. How do you fall from the overlook unless you're doing something stupid ... OR doing something that you shouldn't do because you don't have the experience required to do it? ...

Re: Current weather?

One reason I'm not too optimistic about the smoke going away in the next few weeks.
NW Montana's prevailing wind this time of year is from the SW.
The big fires in CA, WA ID, and OR all located directly to our SouthWest :( :(

Re: Current weather?

The smoke/haze today was the worst I've seen it in the valley this year. You could barely see the Columbia Mts. from the airport exit on US2. WebCams from West Side are looking smoky. att. St. Mary and Logan South look awful as well. Here's the near term forecast details from Great Falls for ...

Re: 2020 "Snaps" Around Glacier National Park

Pete So sorry to hear of your truck issues. I really liked your Shangri La description and now not so unhappy about not being able to do that this year with you. No sense in having 2 weenies on a hike like that anyway :D Chip (Ken) hi Ken: The transmission had 250,000+ miles so it was no surprise. ...

Re: 2020 "Snaps" Around Glacier National Park

I believe you are correct Jay. Thank you all! More bad news LOLOLOL! Had to order a new(rebuilt) transmission. The "loaner" from work is the old 80's Dodge pickup. I cannot travel out of the valley for as long as week to 10 days. Maybe more depending on how long the transmission takes to a...

This worked for me as well this morning.

Re: Eastside Restaurants

I have my Kindle with me all the time. 8)
There was a 38 minute delay for me going home on US2 at about MP 162(~6-7 miles East of Belton)
Alternate lanes open.

You can avoid some delays(in and out of the park) by traveling before 0700

Re: 2020 "Snaps" Around Glacier National Park

Pete, glad you got up to Shangri La. Great hike and you hit a clear day, but it sounds like it was hot. Of course 80F in the sun is hot for me. So any comment on why you needed 4 liters. I assume you filtered once you got to the lake. Jay Yeah Jay, we got very lucky this past Monday in getting clea...

Re: 2020 "Snaps" Around Glacier National Park

I did ShangriLa with Dan Lowery and his 11 year old nephew Monday. The sky was pretty clear Monday AM. It progressively got hazier throughout the day. I drank ~4 liters of water doing. I cannot do that hike again in conditions like this past Monday. This 2 image pano of Iceberg Lake was made about ...

Re: Eastside Restaurants

Service was VERY slow in the three places we had dinner this past weekend. Big shortage of help-- like all over the country. I felt bad for the wait staff. They're doing the best they can under the circumstances. The delays in and out of Many Glacier can be up to 30-40 minutes weekdays between about...

Re: 2020 "Snaps" Around Glacier National Park

Ken, I was teasing you a bit regarding the legal issues around the word "guide". If I'm not receiving any money or in kind compensation, I can "guide" all I want. I feel for people coming this week beginning tomorrow... Temps in the valley will be in the upper 90's and it's prett...

Re: 2020 "Snaps" Around Glacier National Park

Pete, Your videos captured the the A to Z of the Dragons Tail Hike. Well done, friend! It made me long to get back out there. As a footnote to those who viewed it, I have did this hike with Pete. I was a little worried about height and exposure, but like Pete said just take your time and watch what...
