Re: Good news: Let the Plowing began on the GTTSR

Looks like we have two threads going on the same topic. The other one is here: http://glacierparkchat.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2279 Ralph, That's right. I first posted the message here but I know the road opening is a hot topic so I decided to post an article in the general discussion sec...

Re: GTTS Road open June 13

Lyman, You are on the ball!! I opened the Interlake this am and saw the article and thought I would share...but I'm hours behind you! Kristin Kristin, That is probably the only advantage to being a Glacier fan on the east coast. I probably read the Interlake on line before many people in the Flathe...

Re: GTTS Road open June 13

Thanks! Anyone know when it is scheduled to close this year? We will be in Glacier later than usual this time (Sept 1 - 11) so am wondering as I know that there is construction work being done on the Sun road. That is a great question and it has been asked several times and it got me curious as wel...

GTTS Road open June 13

I posted a message in the road section but since it always seems to be a hot topic of speculation and important for trip planning, I thought I would post it here as well. the Park Service now anticipates that the GTTS road will be open this year on June 13. Here is the article from the Daily Interla...

Re: Wife says I have issues.. I told her I have a support group

She just gave me the  look and said :You need help :!: " Snogger, You really need to get your wife to Glacier and then she will be more understanding of your problem. Sometimes I have all I can do around here to get my wife to bring in the firewood or shovel the walk or driveway while I ...

Flathead Industies New Store!

Here is a link to an article in the Daily InterLake about Flathead Industries new Thift Store in Kalispell: http://www.dailyinterlake.com/articles/2008/03/27/opinion/opinion01.txt Last June, after our great breakfast at the Buffalo Cafe in Whitefish, my daughter and I checked out the Flathead Indust...

Re: Your least favorite trail

Which makes me think the last few miles from Siyeh Pass to Sunrift Gorge to be my least fav. Not much but the creek and big steps DOWN! I have to agree with you there. Once you hike below Sexton Glacier, that trail is not very interesting. That is the main reason my son and I decided to do a Siyeh ...

Re: Itinerary - Suggestions Needed

I think the driving times are about the same either way. The Browning/Duck Lake Road route is longer in terms of mileage, but you can drive at higher speeds. It's wide open, sort of like the grasslands you see in "Dances With Wolves." Routes 49 and 89 are shorter distance-wise, but you ca...

Re: Itinerary - Suggestions Needed

Can anyone give me an estimate of how long the drive is between Glacier Park Lodge and Many Glacier Hotel? It doesn't look that long distance-wise, but I realize that road conditions can sometimes make a drive a lot longer than you'd expect. Thanks. I think the distance is about 50 - 60 miles. Ther...

Re: Where to stay last night?

I would suggest the Village Inn if you want to enjoy some nice views of the Lake on your last morning in Glacier. Otherwise my preference would be Whitefish, Columbia Falls or Kalispell (Actually isn't Columbia Falls closer to the airport than Whitefish or Kalispell?) With your departure time, it so...

Re: Locations to base two week visit

I believe the highway distance from Many Glacier to St. Mary is about 21 miles, Rising Sun is probably 7 or 8 miles from St. Mary. I don't think there is much of a problem staying at Many Glacier area and driving to the trailheads along GTTS road. However this is largely a matter of personal prefere...

Re: looking for tips for our first trip to Glacier

I suggest you pick up a copy of the Park Service's great brochure "Day Hikes in Glacier" at one of the Visitors Centers when you first arrive. It has very helpful maps, and information on trail distance and elevation gain. To add to the Hockey Ref's comments, Grinnell Glacier is indicated ...

Emerging Bears Notice - Another sign of Spring

I notice that on March 19th, the Park's Press officer, Melissa Wilson, posted the notice about emerging bears. The Park issues a similar notice each year as I recall but this seems earlier than usual: Date: March 19, 2008 Contact: Melissa Wilson, 406 888-7895 WEST GLACIER, MONT. – With spring’s arri...
