Buffalo Cafe, Whitefish

An article from the Flathead Beacon on the Buffalo Cafe on Third Street E. in Whitefish. A truly great place:

1973 - Hidden Lake Boardwalk extended

An item from the Yesterdays Column in the Hungry Horse News. I believe the boardwalk was first installed in 1971. It was controversial. Some thought it was necessary to preserse the landscape and others thought it was a blight on the landscape: "50 years ago Oct. 19, 1973 Jack Potter and Jim Mc...

Sun Road closes for the winter

An item from the Flathead Beacon. I think the statement of mileage from the west entrance to Avalanche Creek is incorrect. It is more like 15 or 20 miles.

Re: First use of bear spray in the Park

In re-reading the first item, it seems to be unclear whether the spray used was sort of a general pepper spray or whether it was specifically bear spray as we know it today. Maybe someone with further knowledge can clarify that.

Thanks,
Lyman

First use of bear spray in the Park

The Yesterdays column in the Hungry Horse News mentioned several bear incidents including in 1983 what is reputed to be the first use of bear spray in the Park. When I worked in the Park 1970 - 72 and when I went back for visits in 1975 and 1977 I never heard of bear spray and it probably hadn't bee...

Re: Bear attacks this past weekend

It is interesting that this bear stayed in the area after the attack. I have to wonder if the bear considered the bodies of the campers and the body of the dog as a food cache and if that is why it stayed in the area and why it attacked members of the rescue party.

2013 - Swimming all Named Lakes in the Park

I don't think I was aware of this record but here it is in the yesterday's column of the Hungry Horse News. Belated congratulations to Mr. Ankenbauer! How is your list doing, Selkie? "Sept. 11, 2013 Marc Ankenbauer, a seasonal employee in Glacier National Park, finished a 10-year journey by swi...

Re: Apgar Village Lodge vs Village Inn at Apgar

Stay away from Apgar Village Lodge! They have this ridiculous cancellation policy where you have only 30 days to cancel. After that, they keep HALF your money if you cancel. Highway robbery! These places are always sold out. Why do they have such a greedy policy?? Disgraceful. Thanks for the warnin...

Re: Fishing

My daughter and her husband did some fly fishing at Glacier on their trip in mid-July. They tried Lake Ellen Wilson, both at the campground area and at the head of the lake near the waterfall. They saw some good fish but the fish weren't biting. They rented a boat at Two Medicine but had no luck the...

West side and East side

I finally had a good chance to talk with my daughter about her recent trip to Glacier in mid-July. She and her husband are not foodies but gave me the following restaurant report which was all positive, except for the Two Medicine Grill: West side: Lake McDonald Lodge Bar (for snacks and appetizers)...

Re: East Glacier - Two Medicine Grill

My daughter and her husband went to the Two Medicine Grill for lunch during their visit in mid-July. Unfortunately it was the only place on their trip to get a negative review. Long wait for food, their orders were not complete, and service was poor and inattentive. The food itself, when it arrived,...
