Re: Backpacking camp chair?

For me, I think it depends on the weight of your pack vs your strength. I hit 40 lbs, and my ability to carry more weight quickly degrades into a bitch fest. I can do it, but I really don't like it. When I was quite a bit younger, I'd haul 10 lbs in photo gear in addition to my camping stuff, but th...

Re: Grizzly bear euthanized in Many Glacier

Five rangers were searching for this bear during our stay at MG. It was reported (by collar) to be in the stream. One ranger hung out all day waiting in the campsite next to ours (which was empty) with an antenna.

Re: Outside article on GNP, difficulties for thru-hikers

1. I'm not convinced that the primary priority of the NPS is visitors. There are many things the NPS could do to improve the visitor experience that are not being done. 2. Through hikers have (it seems) turned backpacking into a competitive sport; we ran into a bunch of them last week. Closely relat...

Re: 2023 GTTS Contest

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the winners are:

-Tibber with June 15th
-Teapot with 12 people

A formable duo.

Re: Annual Birkie Thread

Ralph, I'm seeing this now. Thanks. Making it to 70 skiing the Birkie is a hell of a feat, which I realize more with each race I do. So making it to 76...I take a bow. I probably won't be racing it much longer, but I will probably ski it in some form for a few years.

Out there in a month...

2023 GTTS Contest

I'll guess 6/29/23 7 am.

The pending contest prize depends on someone contacting Kathy and talking her into donating a keg. Of course a 6 pack or growler would probably be preferred.

I totally agree with you. The new page is cool but functionally is a PITA.

Re: General site updates coming

Thanks for making all the changes. It's a real shot in the arm for the site. Just a comment on photos that are inline in a post. The limits are 1 mg (big) and 5 images per post (small). 700 pixel photos (kinda small) are roughly 200 kb per photo (and less), but even 1000 pixel photos (good size) are...

Re: Annual Birkie Thread

Snow is certainly an issue. In St. Paul this year, we got a venue that started making snow and does daily grooming. We also had a good snow year so you could ski on the "normal" trails for much of the year. The artificial snow trails (and driving to them) is now the new normal. For us, thi...

Re: Annual Birkie Thread

Paul, I re-read your question. From the stand point of an "average" skier, I'd say that yes, they've probably gotten slower. There used to be a number of "masters training programs" in town. It's how shops sold gear. They were filled with people who enjoyed skiing, were willing t...

Re: Annual Birkie Thread

Since I'm getting slower, it's hard to say from my perspective. But, it used to be that the Birkie was a "masters" race. I.e. an old man's race. The college skiers (for the most part) didn't attend because they have their own races going on and the end of years races conflicted. The world ...

Re: Annual Birkie Thread

MIssy, thanks for reading it. You're missing some of little references that locals will enjoy...the old entry cards (everything's online now), medals, races that ended at Telemark Lodge (now tore down) rather than Main Street, or that MarathonFoto used to send actual photos of you during the race to...

Re: Annual Birkie Thread

I finally got around to writing up a Birkie report, but as I wrote, it got long. So here's the first post: https://tworightshoes.wordpress.com/2023/05/12/history-will-teach-us-nothing-but-this-version-has-afib/ It goes through my history (including afib) and some of the St. Paul skiing history. Ther...
