Visiting Glacier in winter

The Park is a different world in winter. Skiing and snowshoeing are available. This year it is pretty much do-it-yourself, though rentals are available. Izaac Walton Inn is near Marias Pass on Rte 2. It offers groomed trails and, per its website, equipment rental. In the past, pre-COVID, the Inn off...

Re: Wind River 2021

Paul , This is a great trip report, hurdles and all, and has conclusively put the Winds on my radar. Thanks for the write-up! The final set of landscape images was over the top. You'll have that forever, Declaring something a national park, monument, whatever is automatically (bureaucratica...

Success with Chalet reservations for 2022?

Sperry Chalet and Granite Park reservations opened earlier in January and, presumably, were filled rapidly. Kevin noted another record-setting year for volume of requests received. Granite Park Chalet seems to be adding guided interpretive hikes and workshops. Here's the schedule: http://www.granite...

As delightful and absorbing on a second read, in the doldrums of January, as it was when first posted.

Re: Zero Vacancies??

A final factor that may be determinative is the need to purchase a timed-entry ticket for driving Going to the Sun Road if you do not have in-Park reservations. (The res may be for a boat ride; not limited to lodging.) See here for all the rules: https://home.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/gtsrticketede...

Re: Zero Vacancies??

For economically priced lodgings, avoid the lodges and try the following: West Glacier: West Glacier motel Many Glacier: Swiftcurrent Motor Inn and Cabins St Mary and nearby: Rising Sun motel and cabins; Johnson's cabins (furnished, lots of August availability: https://www.webreserv.com/book.do?busi...

Re: Wind River 2021

Thanks, Paul. I have a Nemo inflatable air mattress that I guard carefully. No holes so far - but when those air mattresses do spring a leak, it can be almost impossible to identify where the leak is. Joey Coconato of MyOwnFrontier mentions that he uses a 2-person tent, to give bears a little room s...

Re: Wind River 2021

This is great, Paul! Great reading, that is -- I'm sure the cold and rain and backtracking lowered the trip somewhat from "great" in your mind. I've had the Winds on my radar since your previous report. Solo hiking definitely has scary moments. Am wondering about your tent - Dagger, Hornet...

Re: Zero Vacancies??

Expect many cancellations. Things will start to move as spring advances and visitors' plans, often aspirational in the winter, get more realistic. What sites are you looking at? Xanterra shows isolated, one- or two-night availability during the summer. Places will open up. Sperry and Granite Park Ch...

Re: Some thanks

Jay,
I appreciate the callout - thanks.
Those Floral Park tournees were quite something (though I never did them).
I look forward to possibility of site re-normalizing in a few months, though most hiking sites that thrived in the aughts have withered in the teens.

Perhaps related to loss of site functionality, I tried to change my password, which has been compromised, and was not able to.

Re: Glacier Superintendent Mow to Retire

Thanks for posting the info and link. Jeff Mow was superintendent during one of the most difficult periods for Glacier NP. Responsive to the public, candid in his statements. (Nice to see Doug Follett in the photo as well.) It was Stephen Jay Gould who popularized the concept of punctuated equilibri...
