when did you do gunsight to sperry last year? we're planning on doing it on the 21st come hell or high water. :D we've got crampons, poles, but no ice axe. hoping the trail is not closed as i have no desire to go up & back down from lake mcdonald. Tammy, Where can I buy microspikes if I feel we ...

Re: Partial Hikes

if you like waterfalls i'd do the trio of baring falls, st. mary falls, & virginia falls. imo, each more spectacular than the previous one you come to. very easy hike, although there is a little climb to the last one. you'll leave from sunrift gorge & it's an "out & back". Ok. ...

Re: Sperry Chalet via Gunsight Pass

we'll have hiking poles, crampons, rope, & i guess i should carry an ice axe depending on what we hear from the ranger station. i'm assuming there will be anywhere from 35-45 guests at the chalet. do most hike in via gunsight or go up from lake mcdonald? we plan on coming out at the lake but are...

Re: Sperry Chalet via Gunsight Pass

the wife & i are scheduled at sperry for the 21st of july. if anyone makes the hike prior to that date post some information about the re-route around the avalanche area. this will be our first time to make the gunsight pass hike to sperry & i don't want to screw it up. :)

Re: Availability at Sperry & Granite Park Chalets

i lucked out. the date i needed, 7/21, came open & i had been checking about once or twice each week, never thinking something was going to open up. we were one of the ones that got cancelled last year in july because of the avalanche. absolutely thrilled we were able to get it worked out.

Re: Why do we do this?

my wife & i change our workout routine each year leading up to our annual trip to gnp. we move from the gym to walking hills in the afternoons as the days get longer. can't wait for this summer's hikes. roll tide from alabama. Often I am asked why a couple of old geezers like us do this. Why do ...

Re: Help me plan my trip to The Glacier area and Hikes!!

i've done highline several times & would suggest doing highline-swiftcurrent over highline-loop. it's longer but well worth it. you have to use the shuttle with either hike. when you are at swiftcurrent i'd go with iceberg lake first & ptarmigan tunnel second. have done iceberg a half dozen ...

Re: How Many Nights Have You Spent at Glacier??

this will be our 9th straight year to visit gnp & we always stay 4 nights, so i guess we're working on 36. not bad for folks from alabama. we are creatures of habit in that we always stay at mgh. we've stayed a night or two at lake mcdonald & swiftcurrent & even one night down at the mou...

Re: Bears......

After seeing a hiker(tourist) pour the Vienna sausage juice from his can right on the Grinnell Glacier trail I've always worried about what the hikers before me did on the trail. I had to bite my tongue off not to say anything to him. Reminds me of a night when I was working at Many Glacier Hotel w...

Re: piegan pass to many glacier on the 16th

I'm going over on the 13th. I could run up there on the 15th...maybe. I may have other plans. Dunno yet. That won't do you any good anyway though since you'll already be here. I doubt I would be able to do either Piegan Pass or Siyeh pass on the 16th I did Piegan(S to N) Last August the morning aft...
