Re: Siyeh pass

I subscribe to the George Ruhle recommendation mentioned in Lyman's post. I've done the hike several times both ways, and think the scenery going up from Sunrift Gorge was more attractive than the descent down the same trail. And with my knees, climbing is less painful than the descent. Regardless o...

Re: Sperry Chalet flyover
anyone know the status of rebuilding?

Per lead-in on Glacier Conservancy website: and discussions about the next steps for the building are continuing.

Re: Glacier Park in the 50s

Thank you! Interesting to see how the falls have changed over the last 70 years as the opening of the lower falls has enlarged.

Re: July trip pictures

Thanks for the photos. plus link to additional galleries. All are good, but the 2015 gallery is exceptional ... gave me a serious case of mountain fever!

Where is PeteE-??

The chat page has been very quiet this month. While that reflects the end of the summer season, I have missed the posts of PeteE which have allowed so many os us to enjoy GNP vicariously through his photos and trip reports. I hope his absence has nothing to do with a very unfair personal attack on t...

Re: The burning of Sperry Chalet

I think we can all wait in hopes of seeing a final report from a complete investigation of this fire. At the same time, I don't understand why some posters seem to think that no one is qualified to question or challenge the decisions of those involved with the fire. People are people, and all of us...

Re: The burning of Sperry Chalet

Thanks to MattB for correcting my comment about the lack of initial response to the Sprague fire. While I searched for and found the source of that comment, I also found the following correction to that source: I don't remember ever seeing where this fire was just being monitored. Early Inciweb repo...

Re: The burning of Sperry Chalet

I appreciate your comments, Dave, but I think they make the Park's decision to not immediately fight the small lightning fire that has grown into the Sprague fire even more questionable. The limited resources, combined with the abnormally dry conditions in the Park this year (reportedly 47 days of n...

Re: The burning of Sperry Chalet

: Here's a sample of what firefighters have to deal with when a wind driven fire storm approaches a building. This "Ember Storm" is an extremely dangerous situation. I suspect it is nearly impossible to track where all of the embers end up. And any one of those embers can start fire in a ...

Re: The burning of Sperry Chalet

I have to agree with Lyman's assessment based on the early pronouncements regarding the Sprague fire (, e.g. "The chalet is in rocky terrain and the fire crew is confident they can suppress a blaze should it reach the historic structure"; "They felt that the sprinklers were enough”.) ...

Re: Sperry Building Burned

Excerpt from update from the Flathead Beacon linked by llholmes, above: A portion of the chalet was wrapped with fire-resistant material. Other nearby structures, like the Mount Brown Lookout, were completely wrapped in protective material. Diane Mann-Klager, public information officer for the incid...

Re: Sperry Building Burned

This is a terrible outcome, but I can't imagine second guessing professionals and people who knew/loved Sperry as much as any here. Comparing Many Glacier hotel to Sperry seems a little unfair too. [/img] I won't argue with you, especially since I have read Norman McLean's book on the Mann Gulch Fi...

Re: Sperry Building Burned

Can't help second guessing when I read the latest Hungry Horse News report of the chalet fire, with only six firefighters on the ground to protect the entire chalet complex ... and apparently no access to the roof. Quite the contrast from the famous 8/31/36 Heaven's Peak fire (81 years to the day!) ...
