A Special, Final Message

This is a very special message to my Glacier chat friends: It's time for me to say farewell. Many of you know that I have battled colon cancer since late 2007. Twice I thought we'd driven it away for good, only to have it return both times. Apparently I have a fairly aggressive form of the disease t...

Re: happy to have found this board

How cool. I think its a good idea about aski g park staff or somebody about ice on the lake. I think I would opt for grinnel glacier if I found out there was no ice on the lake. I wonder how much more difficult grinnel is, taking the boat rides to shorten the trip vs the iceberg lake. I think grinn...

Re: happy to have found this board

Will there be icebergs left at iceberg lake on august 12? I'm rethinking the hike because I was told they are all gone by then As always, there's no way to predict when the bergs will melt out, although I'd say your chances of seeing ice are pretty decent. And even if the lake is ice-free, the hike...

Re: 1 Week, 3 Big Hikes

Why try to cram so much into such a short period? The park isn't going anywhere. Better to enjoy the hikes than try to just pile on the miles. Daw-Pit isn't doable in 6-7 hours unless you're running. And again, why? What's the point? It's much too scenic a hike to waste it moving so fast. I call bu...

Re: Xanterra East Side Shuttle 2014

The biggest change regarding the east side shuttle between Many Glacier and St. Mary is the following: "Shuttle service must be booked in advance as there are a limited number of seats available." Wow. This will make things hairy for those whose schedules are dependent on weather or last-...

Re: 3-5 Day Backpack Trip Recommendations

you could drop the packs and go get the car and come back for the packs, or send one person to go get the car if people didn't feel like hiking on to the Visitors Center.. Not a good idea to leave packs unattended as they attract wildlife that can tear them to shreds. Even if the packs don't contai...

Re: 3-5 Day Backpack Trip Recommendations

Welcome! The FAQs at the link below have suggestions on BC camping trips and the BC permit process. They should help get you started. I've excerpted the relevant parts, but there is much more in the overall document if you are interested. http://glacier.nationalparkschat.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1...

Re: Swiftcurrent Pass

Depends on the season and how much snow was received the previous winter, although chances are you'll be fine in mid-July.

arctic vortex? 5 degrees in ATL this morning. the Midwest numbers are brutal. coldest weather in 20 years. It was -12 in Indy yesterday and -13 this morning, although we are up to +8 right now. Heat wave! The roads are still a mess from the 12 inches of snow we got on Sunday (on top of six inches a...

Re: St. Mary Lodge or Rising Sun?

I've stayed at each place once, in a duplex cabin at Rising Sun about 10 years ago and in a room across the road from the main hotel at St. Mary Lodge last year. Both were fine, if not luxurious.
