Re: Getting to the Belly River Trailhead

You do have a permit already? I'm guessing not as you I believe you can only reserve one site at Mokawanis Lake as part of the permit lottery system. Haven't backpacked in Glacier for several years, so maybe it has changed. Getting one as a walk-in for 8 people (2 campsites) will be difficult/imposs...

Re: Goat Haunt 2022

In the past few years, the park has not been able to find a water treatment person to man Goat Haunt. I'm guessing that this issue plus maybe some other things may keep Goat Haunt closed again this summer. For the shelters, there is no pit toilet as you use the Visitor Center's facilities.

BackCountry Permits 2022

Just happened to check the Wilderness Camping (i.e. - Backcountry Camping), and there are going to be more advance campsites in 2022. Interesting, but hopefully also more enforcement of permits. Wilderness Camping Advance Reservations The Basics of Advance Reservations New in 2022 - To provide more ...

Re: information Please

Haven't heard on the Goat Haunt boat(watch the Glacier website), but east to west is definitely easier and somewhat shorter -About 14 miles from Goat Haunt versus 20 from Bowman and 18 from Kintla. The hike up from Upper Kinta is tough, although the hike up from the Bowman Lake campground to Boulder...

Re: Goat Haunt 2021

Doubtful in my opinion on Goat Haunt as they don't have the staff to man what is open now. You might be able to hike from Waterton to Goat Haunt along Waterton Lake. It's about 9 miles, but relatively flat. You could call the Backcountry Office and ask them, or maybe they can direct you to someone w...

ZoZeppellin,
Thanks for the explanation, and yes it makes sense.

I'm still trying to digest that there are over 11,000 applications filed.
Thanks.

Re: 2021 Backcountry Permit Applications: Date for submittal now March 17

ZoZeppelin,
I might be missing it, but the article link for the 11550 permit applications in 2019 appears to be the wrong link. Could you check that please?
Thanks.

Re: BC Campgrounds - The Best of the Rest?

I agree. Morningstar is a very nice place, and we saw both moose and mountain goats a few years back. Atlantic makes the hike to/from Red Eagle much more doable, plus the walk up to Medicine Grizzly is nice, and the fishing is very good. The hike from Red Eagle foot to Reynolds is long, but not over...

Re: 2021 Wilderness Camping Permits

We had a trail crew at No Name about 10 years ago who were staying there, but they had a site back in the woods a bit. I wouldn't have known it was there as they had to walk off trail to get there. At Cobalt Lake, we had to share a site with some researchers as it was overbooked, so they definitely ...

Re: 2021 Wilderness Camping Permits

The park can issue up to 5 large group permits per year. These groups use 3 campsites/day, so for a 5 night trip, they take 15 sites. Also, the normal limit of reservable sites is waived. With regular permits, half of the sites are reservable, but large groups can take 3/night, which affects both th...

Re: 2021 Wilderness Camping Permits

Just checked the backcountry/wilderness camping website, and some sites are going away. The park must be processing the large group sites that were submitted on March 1. You might want to check the site before you send in your application on March 15. https://www.nps.gov/applications/glac/bcpermits/...

Re: No Goat Haunt CG for 2021+ Border Closed

The Goat Haunt CG are actually concrete shelters right by the visitor center. Everything, including the dock and ranger station, is on the US side. The border is approximately 1/2 way down the lake. The tour boat goes from Waterton to Goat Haunt and stops at the border so that you can see it. The tr...
