Re: Coleman Stove Cooking

I use this high-fiber, antioxidant-rich breakfast every morning. With minor modification, it could be prepared over a Coleman stove as well: One (or two) packets of Quaker Instant Oatmeal, Original Flavor (or 1/3 cup of oat bran; I use Bob’s Red Mill High Fiber Oat Bran Hot Cereal . If this product ...

Re: Grand Canyon

Since you’re going in the summer, you may also want to give serious consideration to visiting the North Rim (see https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/directions_n_rim.htm). It is, if memory serves me correctly, about a thousand feet higher than the South Rim and, thus, a bit cooler. I couldn’t rec...

Re: New electronics

I would definitely second that breakfast recommendation, Pete. I use 1/3 cup of Bob’s Red Mill High-Fiber Oat Bran cereal, along with a tablespoon of flax seed, a scoop of high-quality whey protein, and a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder, to which a topping of Ceylon cinnamon, blueberries and ...

Re: Bicycle east or west side? / Logan Pass West to Logan Ea

The east side is more open, which also means that it can be, and often is, QUITE windy. Furthermore, to reiterate Jay w's point, there were, and presumably still are, runaway truck ramps on the approach route to St. Mary (U.S. 89 North), due to the steep gradients.

Re: Your favorite really warm and really light clothing

I haven’t shopped for clothing with this feature in quite some time, so I don’t know whether it is now pretty much a standard feature or not, but I also place a premium on outer garments with underarm vents, whether it be in mesh form or a zipper that can be used to open and close the area. This fea...

Re: Trekking poles---worth the hassle?

Hikers who use trekking poles know from their own experience that trekking poles increase stability and reduce lower body joint stress. I ran across a study that you guys might be interested in, one that quantified the degree to which trekking poles improve hiking efficiency . Participants “complete...

Re: Recommended Bear Protection While Hiking in Glacier

For readers of this thread, I ran across a webpage with some interesting tidbits of info concerning bear behavior. See http://www.bearsmart.com/about-bears/dispelling-myths/. Some of the most interesting myths debunked by the author, presumably a wildlife biologist, are the following: Myth #6: If a ...

Re: Recommended Bear Protection While Hiking in Glacier

Krieser, for evidence of just how effective bear spray truly is, see this first-hand account of a wildlife-landscape photographer in the Tetons who got a little too close to two grizzlies: http://daryl-hunter.net/bear-spray-really-works/.

Re: Any Chance of Permits If I Submit Now?

If you were able to push your visit back to the second half of September, your chances of getting a permit would improve even more. Depending on precisely where you want to go, logistics can become more challenging and weather can become iffier, with a greater chance of snow. On the other hand, late...

Re: 2018 Backcountry Permit Buzz

Mfster, if money is not a serious impediment, the St. Mary Lodge and Resort complex (see https://www.glacierparkcollection.com/lodging/st-mary-village/) is another option. It is my understanding, although it is admittedly dated, that they do not tend to book to capacity nearly as fast as the histori...

Re: 2018 Backcountry Permit Buzz

Mfster, it will cost you considerably more than the NPS campgrounds at Many Glacier or Two Medicine, but, if you value the peace of mind of having a reservation in hand, another option would be the KOA campground at St. Mary. If so inclined, you could book that right now. See https://koa.com/campgro...

Re: Your favorite really warm and really light clothing

Mort & Linda, the advice provided above is extremely sound. Allow me, however, to offer another perspective on base layer selection. In terms of quality, you will NEVER go wrong with Smartwool. If, however, you place great value on a base layer’s ability to not only provide warmth, at minimal we...

Re: Recommended Bear Protection While Hiking in Glacier

Krieser, will you be tent-camping or will you employ a hard-sided vehicle (e.g. RV)? As a newcomer to griz country, if you want to exercise all due caution for peace of mind, you might want to give consideration to camping in a hard-sided vehicle. The advice others have given you is sound wisdom and...

Re: 2018 Backcountry Permit Buzz

Greetings, Tammy, from a fellow Nashvillian. If you have not been there before, the Sawtooths are absolutely magnificent, particularly in late September. They are very reminiscent of the Tetons, only 3,000 feet lower in elevation, and far less heavily visited. If you haven’t already seen it, here is...
